Maternal Health Navigator (Doula)

Position Summary: 

The Maternal Health Navigator serves as the primary care manager for expectant mothers and their families. This role will guide patients through their prenatal and postnatal journeys. They will help navigate them through the various complexities of the healthcare system. The Maternal Health Navigator will be responsible for educating patients and their birthing companions about the birthing process and will ensure patients receive the best care available to them.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop rapport and relationships that foster trust to ensure participants feel comfortable and safe.
  • Provide upon enrollment, email/text/phone support during business hours (or after hours under certain circumstances)
  • Provide emotional, physical, and educational support during pregnancy.
  • Provide at least 2-3 prenatal home visits per patient to discuss their pregnancy needs including, but not limited to creating an ideal birth plan, making informed birthing decisions, educating on active labor, creating a pain management techniques plan, review pain management techniques, begin Lamaze training, and create a postpartum plan.
  • Educate the support partner to implement comfort measures, movement, positioning, aromatherapy, and other measures that are supportive of the birthing mother. 
  • Provide at least 3 postnatal visits to discuss postpartum needs/concerns and postpartum plan including, but not limited to feeding, debrief on labor & delivery experience, meal prep/planning, bathing, swaddling techniques, family planning/child spacing, safe sleep practices, stress management, and ASQ - Development Assessment.
  • Provide emotional, physical, and educational support during postpartum.
  • Educate caregivers on newborn care.
  • Participate in and complete an 8-week online Doula Certification Training.
  • Complete all required documentation and reports in a timely fashion and in the manner required by program contracts.
  • Participate in staff meetings, supervision, agency meetings and staff trainings.


Requirements

 Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree with minimum 3 years’ experience working in a community clinic or related field OR
  • Associate Degree in related fields with 4 years’ experience working in a community clinic or related field. 
  • Experience supporting expecting mothers preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the healthcare system.
  • Strong listener with a highly empathetic mindset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Desire to work with and support people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Valid California Driver License with safe driving record.
  • Ability to work on-site full-time.
