About the Role

 POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Program Director, the Group Instructor is responsible for the overall operation, continued development and implementation of programs in the branch, Enrichment department. The position is responsible for, communicating with parents, establishing procedures, and ensuring the program reflects the YMCA’s commitment to child safety. 

Requirements

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conducts and guide the class participants to the successful completion of the activity.
  • Arrives at the gym properly dressed prior to class to open the gym and begin in set up of class. The instructor  will also put all equipment away and  maintain the inventory in an orderly fashion.
  • Responsible  for the well-being and safety of all participants in the class. Therefore, the Instructor will stand where he/she can see all participants. Any injuries or disciplinary problems will be reported to the director. Accident reports must be completed.
  • Make necessary announcements to parents and hand out literature regarding the sports program.
  • Emphasize safety, body awareness, self—confidence, and social development in a fun and encouraging atmosphere.
  • The Group Program Instructor will know where all children are at all times. (Example: drinking fountain or bathroom).
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members and program participants connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.
  • Celebrates achievement of program participants related to program or personal goals, mastering of specific skills or overall health and well-being.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  • Instructors must record accurate class attendance.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have knowledge of sports and recreational games.
  • Must have appropriate past experience working with children.
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication .
  • Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.
  • Ability to demonstrate problem-solving and independent judgment and making decisions within the guidelines of the YMCA.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations. This work requires the following physical activities: bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, and visual acuity.  Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Candidates whose disabilities make then unable to meet these requirements will still be considered fully qualified if they can perform the essential functions of the job with reasonable accommodation.
