About the Role

ABOUT THE POSITION:

At Vermont Gas Systems, we do important work. We ensure the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas services to over 56,000 Vermonters in Chittenden, Franklin, and Addison counties. An Initial Operator plays is an important role on the Distribution and Maintenance Team by working on maintenance and replacement projects. They learn techniques to be able to do high quality work, ensure site safety, and that the work performed is according to company policies and procedure. They work under the supervision of experienced crew members.


WHAT ARE THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS POSITION?

• Becomes familiar with Vermont Gas Systems (VGS) policies, procedures, paperwork, safety rules and follows safe working practices and compliance procedures.

• Learns to safety operate all construction equipment such as backhoes, excavators, trenchers, and any other equipment of this kind which the Company may or may not be presently using.

• Learns to operate and do first echelon maintenance and understands how to make simple repairs to the above-mentioned equipment.

• Learns techniques for proper maintenance to conduct for tools and equipment.

• Responsible for digging around utilities, working in the trench with their team to complete repairs, new installations, gas line replacements and retirements. 

• Learns various technology used in the field including laptops, ipads, iphones, GPS, GIS and other electronic devices in order to enhance production, data sharing, and access to 

records real time.

• Individual has a comprehensive development plan.

• Learns and practices the duties and responsibilities of a Initial Gas Technician.

• Attends all required trainings, such as safety, compliance and monthly team meetings.

• Works towards obtaining appropriate Operator Qualifications.

• Works towards obtaining Natural Gas Certification.

• Performs other duties as assigned.


WHAT ARE REQUIRED SKILLS FOR THIS ROLE? 

• Must have unrestricted automobile operator’s license. Must obtain and/or maintain a Class CDL A license.

• Self-motivated.

• Contributes positively to the team.

• Communicates effectively with others.

• Able to be flexible and respond to stressful situations calmly with maturity and professionalism. 

• Basic technology and computer skills.

• Able to work during required hours, which includes overtime.

• High school diploma or GED. Vocational school training a plus.

• Experience with operating heavy equipment.

• Solid safety record.


Physical Demands/Work Conditions

• This position is Safety Sensitive and subject to appropriate drug and alcohol testing as prescribed by the Federal Register 49 CFR-Section 199.

• Must be able to lift and carry materials or equipment weighing up to 50lbs on a frequent basis.

• Prolonged standing and frequent bending, stooping and reaching is required on a daily basis. 

• May have to work on uneven ground and be exposed to dust, fumes, gases or odors. 

• Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required for specific job duties.

• Ability to calmly handle high pressure situations to include emergencies.
