About the Role

Brief Summary of Position:

Set up and operate a variety of testing and inspection equipment; inspect and control department tools and supplies. Maintain test record and reports. Provide test certification as necessary. Ability to do any and all functions of the Inspector/Tester and Lead Inspector/Tester. 

 

Responsibilities/Essential Functions of Position:

Inspection:

  • Work from Standard Processing Instructions (SPI), charts and specifications. 
  • Gather samples from various stages of production to measure physical and mechanical dimensions which would include: tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, hardness, magnetic tests, and metal thickness, camber, flatness and observation of any physical defects. 
  • Observe and check measurement methods and techniques plus related details to determine conformance to standards for quality production. 
  • Recommend and direct corrective measures as required.
  • Perform incoming inspections of raw materials to assure conformance to specifications. 
  • Inspect materials returned by customer and prepare report for Quality Manager/Technician regarding the return. 
  • Keep Quality and Engineering teams informed of developments, activities and trends. Maintain and update statistical process control charts for all products. 
  • Perform final inspections as specified on work order.
  • Prepare Silicon steel samples for Epstein tests.
  • Perform Epstein testing on SMT-700 tester, stack testing and coating thickness for silicon steels.
  • Serve as back-up support for Grain Size analysis testing.


Tooling:

  • Assist production supervisor with tooling maintenance and activities for the Tooling Room and Lapping Dept. maintenance to include:
    • Coordination of tooling and maintenance activities with outside suppliers of tooling and machining.
  • Issue tooling and deliver to production area as requested or according to instructions. 
  • Assure correct identification of tools before putting into or returning to storage. 
  • Inspect tooling upon return for damage. Inform production supervisor as to broken/damaged items, tool shortages and need for reordering to maintain prescribed levels. 
  • Apply rust preventative to tooling as required for storage.
  • Maintain record of withdrawals and returns of tooling. 
  • Maintain record of tooling usage, location, quantities and maintain inventory. 
  • Ordering production related consumable supplies; return unused supplies to storage. 
  • Deliver supplies to production area as requested or according to instructions.
  • Additional duties as required by the business.

Calibration:

  • Responsibility for the calibration tracking system of inspection devices and tools, controllers and recorders of process equipment. 
  • Interaction with outside vendors for tooling and machining and calibration contractors. 


Supervisor Responsibilities: 

  • None; may direct work of one other person with Inspection area. 


Required Technical/Job Experience and Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of testing equipment and measures
  • Mathematical skills in arithmetic & algebra 
  • Ability to read drawings, specification charts & tables. 
  • 2-5 years of experience using data collecting devices to record readings.

 

Education Requirements:

  • High School degree, diploma or a GED equivalent qualification from a certified college.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Standard work week is Monday through Friday, hours to be consistent with business unit; some off hours work expected
  • Working in production environment. 


Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
