Job Description

Knobelsdorff is seeking a Medium Voltage (MV) Electrical Lead with a strong utility or electrical distribution background to provide technical leadership and mentoring. This individual will serve as a subject matter expert in medium voltage design, installation, and commissioning, supporting our utility, industrial, and infrastructure projects.

The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in MV systems (5kV–35kV) including underground distribution, substation interfaces, and electrical system design, and will be able to guide crews and junior engineers both in the field and during design reviews. While this role is not field-based full time, it requires occasional site visits and strong collaboration with operations, engineering, and preconstruction teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical lead for MV electrical scope across multiple projects.
  • Review and guide the design of medium voltage systems including:
    • Duct banks, riser poles, vaults, cable routing, sizing and terminations, and grounding
    • Specification and selection of transformers, switchgear, MV apparatus (reclosers, GOAB, etc.), protection and control equipment, and MV Metering.
  • Mentor and develop field supervisors, foremen, and junior engineers.
  • Act as a liaison between engineering and field teams—ensuring constructability, code compliance, and clarity.
  • Collaborate with preconstruction and estimating to review drawings and support bid strategy.
  • Participate in design reviews, equipment submittals, and utility coordination meetings.
  • Maintain high standards of electrical safety, code compliance (NEC/NESC), and industry best practices.
  • Support QA/QC, installation inspections, and occasional field commissioning activities.
  • Provide technical training to internal staff around MV best practices and lessons learned.

Qualifications

  • The requirements listed in job descriptions are guidelines, not fixed rules. You do not have to satisfy every requirement or meet every qualification listed. If you feel you are an excellent candidate, we encourage you to apply!
  • Experience in medium voltage electrical systems in a utility or industrial setting.
  • Strong knowledge of underground MV distribution, splicing, terminations, and utility standards.
  • Experience mentoring electrical personnel or leading cross-functional project teams.
  • Ability to interpret electrical one-lines, schematics, and construction documents.
  • Familiarity with substation components and MV equipment (padmounts, switchgear, reclosers).
  • Experience working with utility providers on interconnection and coordination.
  • Working knowledge of NEC, NESC, and utility design standards.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and ideally Revit, Procore, or Smartsheets.

Preferred Credentials

  • Journeyman or Master Electrician License, OR
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Construction Management, or related field
  • OSHA 30 or utility safety certifications
  • Previous experience at a utility company, electrical contractor, or EPC firm
