About the Role

Description

Job Summary: Provides direct patient care in the maternity and newborn care setting. Communicates with physicians about changes in patient’s clinical condition including: fetal monitoring, results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, is able to perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision. Participates in performance improvement activities.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
  • Ability to assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation.  NRP certification.
  • Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes neonatal and the general patient population.
  • Ability to formulate an individualized plan of care and revise plan as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning (family in included in teaching as appropriate).
  • Demonstrates knowledge of electronic fetal monitoring, identifies FHR patterns and treats appropriately based upon ACOG/NCC standards.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to house supervisor, co-workers and physicians.
  • Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
  • Actively participates in patient education including self-care, infant care and feeding and bathing.
  • Coordinates and supervises patient care as necessary. 
  • Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures in labor and delivery, postpartum and newborn nursery.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. 
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Documentation meets current standards and polices. 
  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family. 
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. 
  • Attends in-services.  

Requirements

Professional Requirements:

  • Adheres to dress code, appearance in neat and clean. 
  • Completes annual educational requirements. 
  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and CMS regulations.   
  • Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times. 
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.  
  • Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.  
  • Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments and staff.   
  • Actively participates in the departments CQI activities. 
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety and infection control.  
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner. 
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business. 
  • Communicates the mission, vision, core values, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the mission statement of the department.  

Regulatory Requirements:

  • Current state Registered Nurse Licensure
  • One or more years of recent Labor and Delivery/Newborn Nursery experience
  • Successful completion of Neonatal Resuscitation certification
  • BCLS and fetal monitoring certification
  • ACLS
