The Opportunity
We are looking for a Traffic Incident Responder to join our Traffic Management team with the Wellington Transport Alliance (WTA).
The Traffic Incident Responder is responsible for ensuring that the WTA keeps road users moving safely through the Wellington Regional State Highway Network in the event of an incident. Incidents range from significant crashes, adverse weather, asset damage and adverse or illegal behaviour. This role manages minor incidents and supports emergency services in serious incidents.
Effective collaboration with the Wellington Transport Operations Centre (WTOC) and emergency services is imperative for the success of this role. Reactive in nature, incident response requires responders to act quickly to assess a situation and implement the appropriate emergency controls in an efficient and timely manner.
- Undertaking reactive and programmed works and associated activities
- Responding to incidents in a timely manner, providing support and assistance
- Providing traffic management response at incident scenes
- Coordination and management of incidents as required
- Participating in incident debriefs with appropriate personnel to continually improve the team's response to incidents
- Completing reports as necessary and supporting the Team Leader to ensure reporting is accurate and consistent
- Ensuring plant and equipment is in good order and ready for immediate mobilisation.
- Identifying and planning any training requirements with the WTA IR Manager
- Ensuring the safety of our team, emergency services and the public with the delivery of temporary traffic management
- Identifying hazards to crewmates, contractors, visitors or public and react to ensure their safety
- Risk Management
- General road maintenance duties when not responding to incidents
This role will require the successful candidate to undertake shift work and be rostered on-call after hours (including weekends and public holidays, when required).
Hours of work are Monday to Friday from 12pm-10pm. There may also be the requirement to work Saturdays from 10am-5pm.
About you
You’ll demonstrate strong initiative and a proactive mindset, thriving in a dynamic environment while contributing to a highly performing roading network.
To be successful in this role you will ideally have the following:
- Professional presentation and ability to communicate effectively with clients and members of the public
- Risk assessment and hazard identification skills
- Full class 1 license minimum
- First aid certificate
- Traffic management knowledge or a general interest in the industry & a willingness to learn
- Experience in incident response or emergency management advantageous but not essential
- Possess a positive attitude & demonstrate resilience when under pressure
- Excellent people skills & demonstrated leadership skills
- Ability to work autonomously & think in an innovative way
- Ability to think on your feet & evaluate situations quickly
- Strong risk assessment skills
- Basic computer literacy
- Mechanical knowledge (desired but not essential)
- Proven safety record with an unwavering commitment towards living safely.
