SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities and Maintenance and in collaboration with the parish and school administration, the Custodian is responsible for ensuring that all parish and school buildings are clean, safe, orderly, and properly maintained. This position provides essential custodial support for the church, school, administrative offices, gym, meeting spaces, and auxiliary facilities.


The custodian must be physically capable of performing all required tasks, including lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and operating custodial equipment. This role directly supports the mission of the parish and school by creating an environment that is welcoming, sanitary, and conducive to worship, learning, and community life.



ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES


General Cleaning & Sanitation

· Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and disinfect all assigned interior spaces (church, classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, cafeteria, gym, meeting rooms, etc.).

· Clean and sanitize restrooms daily; restock all paper products, soap, and supplies.

· Empty and replace trash and recycling receptacles throughout campus; clean waste bins as needed.

· Clean glass doors, interior windows, and high-touch surfaces routinely.

· Maintain an organized and sanitary custodial supply room, label and store chemicals properly.

· Perform deep cleaning tasks during seasonal breaks or as directed.


Church & Liturgical Spaces

· Ensure worship spaces are clean, orderly, and prepared for liturgical events.

· Dust pews, sanctuary furnishings, statues, windowsills, and sacred art as instructed.

· Replace candles, holy water as necessary, and report supply needs to supervisor.

· Support set-up and clean-up for sacramental celebrations, funerals, parish missions, and special liturgies.


School & Parish Facilities Support

· Clean classrooms, hallways, cafeteria areas, gym spaces, and administrative areas.

· Assist with set-up/tear-down of tables, chairs, and equipment for parish or school events.

· Monitor, report, and document any maintenance concerns, safety hazards, or repair needs.

· Follow all safety protocols and Archdiocesan facility guidelines.


Routine Custodial Operations

· Perform and document routine cleaning, facility inspections, and supply inventory.

· Secure buildings as directed, ensuring doors, windows, and alarm systems are properly managed.

· Coordinate with Plant Manager to ensure cleaning schedules are followed and adjusted based on parish/school activities.


Teamwork and Communication

· Work respectfully with clergy, school staff, parish staff, volunteers, parents, students, contractors, and parishioners.

· Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.

· Support and collaborate with other facility personnel as needed.


Requirements

 Skills & Competencies

· Knowledge of custodial equipment and cleaning methods, including safe chemical handling.

· Reliable, self-directed, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

· Strong time-management skills; ability to prioritize competing demands.

· Clear verbal communication skills; ability to work respectfully in a Catholic church and school environment.

· Ability to follow written and oral instructions and maintain cleaning schedules.


Physical Requirements

The custodian must be physically capable of:

· Lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying a minimum of 50 lbs.

· Being on their feet 80–90% of the workday performing moderate physical activity.

· Bending, reaching, kneeling, climbing ladders, and performing repetitive motions.

· Operating basic custodial equipment (buffers, vacuums, carpet extractors, floor machines, etc.).

· Working indoors and occasionally outdoors in varying conditions.


Professional Requirements

· High level of discretion, integrity, and respect for sacred spaces.

· Ability to maintain an orderly, clean appearance and represent the parish with professionalism.

· Completion of all Safe Environment/OVASE requirements mandated by the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

· High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

· Prior custodial, janitorial, or facilities experience preferred.


 Working Conditions

· May require flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, major liturgical seasons (Advent/Christmas, Lent/Easter), and school/parish events.

· May require local travel for parish-related errands or supply pickup (if authorized).

· Must be reachable by phone for emergencies or facility-related issues.
