As Lead Registered Nurse with VOAMASS, you’ll have a dynamic and critical role providing advanced nursing oversight within VOAMASS integrated programs. In addition to all standard Registered Nurse duties, the Lead RN is responsible for supervising nursing staff, supporting clinical decision-making across programs, coordinating medical workflows, and ensuring high-quality, person-centered care. The Lead RN works closely with PMHNPs, the Medical Director, Integrated Care Teams, program leadership, and external providers to enhance whole-person health outcomes and maintain compliance with state regulations and professional nursing standards.
Some of your critical responsibilities:
- Provide assessments and physical examinations to individuals with mental health, substance use, dual diagnosis, and co-occurring disorders.
- Collect vital signs, complete preventative care screenings, complete routine procedures, and report on person served symptoms and collaborate with PMHNP’s.
- Develop, implement, and revise integrated care plans that reflect person served diagnosis and outlined standards of care.
- Will coordinate closely with PMHNP’s and Medical Director, PCP’s, and external medical providers to enhance the whole health of the people that we serve.
- Provide support to PMHNP’s prescribing practice for prescription of medication, completes insurance prior authorization and medication reconciliation in conjunction with PMHNP’s.
- Serve as part of the 24/7 mobile crisis team to ensure that persons served are being provided assessments, preventative healthcare screenings, and prescribed injectable medications (Vivitrol, Sublocade, long-acting anti-psychotics) with a no four walls approach. May intervene in emergency or crisis situations according to 24/7 mobile crisis protocol.
- Serve as part of the ACT/IDDT team to ensure that persons served enrolled in the ACT/IDDT are obtaining immediate access to medical and psychiatric services in conjunction with the PMHNP’s and Medical Director. Registered Nurse will manage withdrawal symptoms and administer medications as indicated per appropriate MD orders. May intervene in emergency or crisis situations according to ACT/IDDT team protocol.
- Serve as part of the integrated services care team and multidisciplinary review team to enhance persons served experiences and maintain agency compliance with state regulations and medical professional standards. Provides consultation and training to clinical staff as member of the integrated service team.
- Maintain records according to VOAMASS Policies and Procedures, completing all documentation and billing in a timely manner.
Additional lead responsibilities:
- Provide direct supervision, guidance, and support to nursing staff, including scheduling, workflow coordination, training, and oversight of clinical tasks.
- Serve as the primary nursing point of contact for program directors, integrated care teams, and external partners to ensure consistent and effective nursing practice across programs.
- Review, audit, and monitor nursing documentation, medication workflows, and adherence to clinical protocols to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance.
- Lead onboarding, competency training, and skill development for new and existing nursing staff and program staff, including education on medication administration, screenings, integrated care protocols, and emergency procedures.
- Provide real-time clinical consultation and escalation support to RNs, clinicians, recovery staff, and supervisors regarding medical concerns, triage decisions, and person-served safety.
- Assist in developing and updating nursing policies, procedures, and workflows in collaboration with the Medical Director and integrated services leadership.
The Lead RN role is about making a difference in the lives of the people we serve. You’ll bring the following qualifications:
- An Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing with an active Massachusetts Registered Nurse (RN) license is required.
- Candidates should have a minimum of 3–5 years of nursing experience, preferably with individuals experiencing mental health conditions, substance use disorders, dual diagnoses, and co-occurring disorders.
- Prior supervisory or team lead experience is strongly preferred.
- The Lead RN must be willing to work across various VOAMASS locations and demonstrate excellent patient-centered care, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Strong leadership abilities including coaching, providing performance feedback, and supporting nursing and integrated care staff are essential.
