The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) reports to the CEO and serves in an advisory capacity to the CEO, Committee Chairs, and Board of Directors, providing strategic leadership where needed. The CFO is a member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and is a strategic thought leader that embraces change for growth. The CFO has strong business and financial acumen and is accountable for the organization's financial and risk management operations. The CFO is responsible for financial planning, reporting, budgeting, compliance, tax, treasury and accounting operations.

Working collaboratively with leadership team members, the CFO is responsible for developing and implementing the organization’s long and short-term financial operating model with metrics tied to the strategy. The CFO provides organizational and functional leadership and direction for all finance-related activities, guided by a commitment to providing timely, accurate, high-quality information and service. The CFO will be a critical thought partner to the organization’s program, marketing, technology, talent management, and fundraising functions.

What you’ll do:

  • Responsible for financial management and reporting 
  • Responsible for strategic (and short-term) financial planning, forecasting, and financial analysis 
  • Responsible for leadership and facilitation of United Way and United Way for Greater Austin’s Board Committees and support overall United Way governance. (Audit & Ethics, Compensation, Executive, Finance and Investment Committees)
  • Handles proprietary and confidential information and requires confidentiality in these matters.
  • Monitor business performance with scorecard tracking tools, establish corrective measures as needed, and prepare detailed reports for the Board, Committee, management team, and rest of the organization.
  • Support overall Board governance activities.
  • Collaborate with the Chief People Officer in overall people success strategies.
  • Collaborate with Resource Development in fundraising strategy as it supports the growth strategy.
  • Ensures all financial reports comply with federal, state, and local financial requirements (Includes grant and IRS reporting)
  • Identify and manage business risks and insurance requirements (commercial and employee medical).
  • Ensure cross-functional collaboration to support the achievement of United Way for Greater Austin’s goals and objectives.
  • All other duties as required.

What you’ll bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is required; Master’s degree is preferred 
  • Certified Public Accountant designation preferred
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive accounting experience in a nonprofit organization, including a minimum of 5 years of direct staff supervisory experience 
  • Five or more years of non-profit experience as CFO, Financial leader, or relevant role
  • Can reengineer processes to optimize operational controls and business processes
  • Stewards’ donor investments with the highest ethics and integrity
  • Has the ability to examine and understand strategic business needs and develop financial plans to support those needs as part of the overall growth strategy
  • Experience driving for results using various tools and methods to monitor the organization's progress toward goals, objectives, and strategies
  • Can deliver comprehensive information clearly and concisely to the Board, ELT, SLT, and the UW organization
  • Brings solid financial leadership and excellence in all areas of finance 
  • Experience driving for results using various tools and methods to monitor organizations’ progress toward goals, objectives, and strategies

This position is in Austin, Texas, and reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.
