Job Purpose and Responsibilities
Under the immediate direction of a Patrol Sergeant, the Reserve Officer is responsible for efficiently using the vast professional knowledge and experience of retired police officers, within a specialized unit, to assist the Police Department in accomplishing its mission.
The Springdale Police Department recognizes the professional value of veteran police officers who have retired. The past training and experience of these individuals are extensive and the City has considerably invested in the professional development of police officers throughout their career. At all times, the personal and professional conduct of the Reserve Officer shall maintain the tenets of his / her oath of office.

- Circulates throughout assigned patrol area to maintain law and order
- Responds promptly to reports of crimes and citizen complaints
- Interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects of crimes, accidents, and disturbances
- Apprehends persons violating the statutes of the State of Ohio and the ordinances of the City of Springdale
- Appears in both civil and criminal court as required
- Investigates suspicious persons and activity
- Questions individuals to determine facts and to draw reasonable and logical conclusions
- Enforces the traffic code and directs / controls traffic
- Controls crowds at public events, demonstrations, and gatherings
- Follows up and records data on all previously reported crimes and accidents
- Serves and follows up on all lawfully executed warrants and processes, including subpoenas
- Cares for the welfare of prisoners
- Searches individuals in custody
- Follows all Department directives, regulations, procedures, and administrative memoranda
- May use physical force, less than lethal force, or lethal force to protect oneself or others, to maintain order, or to make an arrest
- Maintains proficiency with assigned equipment, including firearms
- Maintains positive public relations, including discussing appropriate topics of interest with civic groups, students, and others
- Attends required training
- Performs any and all other duties as assigned
Requirements
Qualifications
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
- Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Must meet the training standards for certification as a police officer as required by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Council
- Ability to perform all duties of a Patrol Officer
- Knowledge of police procedures and techniques and of the rules and regulations of the Police Department
- Maintain ability to use firearms and other police weapons to the Police Department’s standards
- Ability to periodically engage in strenuous physical activity to make an arrest or to defend oneself or others
- Knowledge of criminal law, criminal investigation, and crime prevention methods
- Knowledge of traffic law, traffic investigation, and traffic enforcement / regulation methods
- Knowledge of rules of evidence and of laws governing search and seizure
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and the general public
- Knowledge of constitutional and civil rights laws
- Ability to write and speak clearly and concisely
- Ability to read, hear, comprehend, and react to oral instructions
- Ability to drive an automobile
- Ability to operate effectively under pressure with little supervision
- Must be able and willing to work a flexible schedule
Working Conditions
Sworn personnel work schedules that include nights, weekends, and holidays. They must be reliable to respond when recalled for emergencies. Sworn personnel often work in outside weather conditions and hazardous environments.
Physical Requirements
Must maintain physical conditioning required to obtain certification as a police officer as required by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Council.
