About the Role

Description

The position of YDP Support Specialist is responsible for supporting & filling in where needed. The YDP Support Specialist will support in planning, implementing, and evaluating program outcomes in the core areas of academic and career success, health and recreation activities, character and leadership development, the arts, and specially targeted programs.


In addition, the position also provides supervision and promotes engagement of club members, and ensures a safe and supportive environment for club members by promoting positive relationships.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contributes to the creation of the Club’s overall climate for youth development and success.
  • Plans and implements activities to meet the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social needs of the children in our program.
  • Monitors Club for safety at all times: checking blind spots, monitoring hallways, mitigates cleaning hazards, monitors chemicals housed in building.
  • Assists YDPs, volunteers, and other staff is meeting organizational goals, assisting in supervising programs and members, and providing support in various areas based on need.
  • Recognize which areas need support and proactively filling in for staff who need assistance.
  • Displays flexibility in assisting staff in various types of programming, performing different duties such as ensuring the safety or members, participating in programs, and assisting members in participating in programs.
  • Promotes and stimulates program participation.
  • Participates as part of a team to run quality programs by helping where needed or directed, which may include driving and serving as YDP substitute when needed.
  • Builds positive relationships with other staff and members in order to better serve in various roles.
  • Maintains order and as required and as per BGCMLA policy, discipline of club members.
  • Oversight of volunteers and program assistants when necessary.
  • Ensures supply and program areas are neat and orderly, and bulletin boards and notices are current.
  • Recommends needed repairs to facility and / or equipment.
  • Ensures a productive work environment by participating in programmatic/club staff meetings.
  • Participates in training / educational opportunities to expand knowledge and skills.
  • As needed the position will be involved in collaborative, or engage in leading, community outreach, program extension, and club related event activities.
  • Assists with special projects.
  • May be asked to fill in for absent YDP’s at any BGCMLA site.
  • Assumes all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION

  • High School diploma or GED, minimum of two years of college experience preferred.
  • Combined experience and/or formal training equivalent to a minimum of two years where:
  • There is experience working with youth and knowledge of youth development.
  • Formal training, and/or experience teaching youth while creating engaging learning experiences.
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills.
  • Hold a valid drivers’ license and pass motor vehicle driving record check.
  • Pass criminal background check.
  • Pass (negative result) a TB test.
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications preferred.
  • Prior experience working in a Boys & Girls Club preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY and SKILLS

  • Knowledge of subject matter within core areas and youth development in general.
  • Skilled in creative planning, implementing quality youth programs, organizational /and project management, and working toward positive outcomes.
  • Ability to deal effectively with members, including disciplinary issues. Demonstrated ability in relationship building and working with young people and parents. Ability to demonstrate a professional manner in all interactions, able to facilitate a diverse group of youth effectively, and to organize time well and focus on completing assigned tasks with minimal supervision.

WORKING CONDITIONS and DRIVING

  • Travel between Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles sites and schools and various field trip sites as well as in the community is required. Must meet the insurance standards of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles.
  • Hours are based on school calendar and attendance patterns/trends– evening hours are required during the school year; hours will vary during summer and school breaks; occasional weekend hours are required.

The position requires the ability to maintain a stationary position and engage in physical activities such as moving, bending, reaching, and positioning. It may also involve traversing and ascending/descending as necessary. The role includes frequent interruptions via in-person contact, phone calls, and email communications.


Work environments may vary, encompassing both indoor and outdoor conditions based on activity locations. Additionally, interactions with youth and adults may involve moderate to high noise levels during activities. Physical exertion may be necessary to move and transport supplies and equipment.
