The Vail Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery (VSON) Athletic Training Residency is founded and supported through residency and fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeons providing care to one of the nation’s most athletic areas including professional and local athletes, the US Ski Team, and destination athletes of all ages and sports levels. VSON currently employs 12 Athletic Trainers who are critical to the orthopaedic physicians at VSON in providing exceptional care to their patients. 

We are pleased to host a 1-year Athletic Training Residency for certified Athletic Trainers from July 13, 2026 to July 16, 2027. This post-graduate level residency program is a stipend-based educational program for the certified Athletic Trainer designed to provide advanced knowledge and skills in the clinical and surgical orthopaedic setting. Athletic Training Residents will be educated directly by world class orthopaedic physicians and their knowledgeable staff. Educational areas include clinic, operating room, durable medical equipment, physical therapy, sports outreach, and research through the Vail Summit Orthopaedics Research Foundation.

The Vail Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery Athletic Training Residency Program accepts certified Athletic Trainers into the program with the goal of preparing them experience and advanced knowledge including diagnostic, evaluation and operating room skills based on an orthopaedic/sports medicine clinical and surgical setting.  Athletic Training Residents will rotate with all VSON physicians and specialties, including ankle, back, elbow, foot, hand, hip, joint replacement, knee, neck, neurosurgery, orthopedic trauma, physical medicine and rehabilitation, shoulder, spine, sports medicine, and wrist.  Athletic Training Residents also attend regularly scheduled academic sessions/labs, have research objectives through the Vail Summit Orthopaedics Research Foundation and sports outreach assignments. 

The Vail Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery Athletic Training Residency program is unique in that it is one of the few programs in the country that has a neurosurgery department and trauma surgery experience.

Vail Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery is an Approved BOC Provider for Athletic Trainers. The Athletic Training Residency curriculum is based on the CAATE standards including advanced post professional education aligned with the 5 practice domains of athletic training.

The position includes a stipend of $56,485, medical, dental and vision benefits, $2,000 continuing education fund, a season ski pass, along with other employee benefits.

  • Expose certified Athletic Trainers to a high quality team-based sports medicine education and experience. This educational platform is a hands-on and real-life experience that is set apart from traditional settings. Residency candidates will demonstrate dedication to furthering their athletic training education and profession alike.
  • Provide defined educational competencies in clinical, surgical, physical therapy, radiology, outreach, and research requirements.

Goals

  • Expose certified athletic trainers with a consistent high-level clinical and surgical experience.
  • Provide certified athletic trainers a curriculum in radiology, physical therapy, and sports outreach.
  • Educate the certified athletic trainer on outcomes-based orthopaedic research through the Vail Summit Orthopaedics Research Foundation.
  • Present orthopaedic sports medicine content at local, state, regional, or national levels




Requirements

Requirements

Credentials to Apply:  Master’s Degree, 1-year certified experience preferred but not required, BOC certified, current or eligible for state licensure, current CPR, NPI #, valid driver’s license, pass required background check and drug screen.
