Description
Position: Audio Visual (AV) and Video Teleconferencing (VTC) Field Engineer
Location: Pentagon & Mark Center
Clearance: Active Secret, TS is desirable
Job Description:
An AV/VTC Field Engineer is a hands-on, mobile technical expert responsible for the physical installation, commissioning, and on-site servicing of integrated audio-visual and video conferencing systems. Unlike an office-based engineer or a programmer, the Field Engineer's primary workplace is at client sites. They are the critical link between the system design and the final, functioning product, ensuring that projects are deployed successfully in the real world.
Key Responsibilities
Field Engineer is highly action-oriented and revolves around on-site project execution and support.
On-Site Installation & Commissioning: Execute the physical installation of AV/VTC systems based on engineering drawings. This includes rack fabrication, mounting displays and cameras, installing microphones and speakers, and terminating cables (Ethernet, audio, video). Power up the system, load control code provided by AV programmers, and configure all devices (e.g., VTC codecs, DSPs, network switches). Systematically test every function of the room—from making a VTC call to ensuring every microphone works—to certify that the system is fully operational and meets the design specifications.
Advanced Troubleshooting & Maintenance: Serve as the primary on-site technician for diagnosing and resolving complex system failures. Troubleshoot issues that require a physical presence, such as faulty hardware, cabling problems, or network connectivity issues at the client location. Perform preventative maintenance and system health checks to ensure long-term reliability.
Client Interaction & Training: Act as the primary technical point of contact for the client during the installation and commissioning phase. Provide end-user training, walking clients through how to use their new system. Professionally manage client expectations and provide clear, concise updates on project status.
Documentation & Reporting: Meticulously document all aspects of the installation. This includes creating "red-line" drawings to reflect any on-site changes from the original design. Complete detailed field reports, commissioning checklists, and timesheets. Manage on-site inventory of parts and materials.
Requirements
Skills and Qualifications
A successful Field Engineer needs a strong mix of technical knowledge, hands-on skills, and personal discipline.
• Technical Installation Skills: Expertise in reading schematics, terminating connectors, and fabricating equipment racks. Must be proficient with hand and power tools.
• Commissioning Knowledge: Ability to configure a wide range of AV hardware, including control processors (Crestron, AMX), DSPs (Biamp, QSC), and VTC codecs (Cisco, Poly, Teams/Zoom Rooms hardware).
• Networking Proficiency: Strong understanding of IP networking is mandatory for VTC integration. Must be able to troubleshoot connectivity issues, configure IP settings on devices, and work with client IT departments.
• Certifications: An AVIXA CTS certification is standard. A CTS-I (Certified Technology Specialist - Installation) is highly desirable and specifically tailored to this role. Manufacturer certifications are also extremely valuable.
• Autonomy & Professionalism: The ability to work independently, manage one's own schedule, and maintain a professional demeanor is crucial, as this is a client-facing role often performed without direct supervision.
• Physical Fitness: The role requires the ability to lift heavy equipment, work on ladders, and operate in construction environments.
Seniority/Experience: Mid-to-Senior (3-7+ years, requires high autonomy)
