JOB SUMMARY: The Arts Specialist is responsible for leading and managing the creative arts programs across all upper levels of care (ULC). This role involves designing and teaching art classes, coordinating volunteer programs, and ensuring the seamless integration of art initiatives into daily activities. Additionally, the Arts Specialist will play a key role in planning and executing the opening of the Arts Café, fostering a vibrant, artistic environment for community engagement.

- Organize and oversee the art activity calendar and the general life enrichment calendar for all ULC, ensuring that programs are appropriately scheduled and customized for each group’s needs.
- Develop, implement, and lead art classes for AL, MC, and HCC residents, adjusting content to cater to different skill levels. Provide advanced classes to engage residents with higher artistic capabilities, fostering deeper involvement.
- Collaborate with the Volunteer Program to integrate and manage volunteers in art initiatives. Provide necessary training and guidance to volunteers, enhancing the overall arts experience for residents.
- Assist with the opening and operational oversight of the Arts Café, including logistical planning, staffing coordination, and securing supplies and equipment. Ensure the café functions as a dynamic space for artistic engagement and community involvement.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for families regarding the art programs, ensuring clear and consistent communication about their loved ones’ participation, achievements, and upcoming events.
- Design, implement, and lead a variety of arts programs, including visual arts, music, theater, dance, and digital arts. Encourage creativity, self-expression, and artistic growth in participants of all levels.
- Plan and coordinate arts-related events, such as exhibitions and showcases, ensuring that all aspects of the events run smoothly and offer meaningful experiences for participants
- Provide ongoing mentorship and feedback to residents, guiding their artistic development and encouraging self-expression. Assess individual progress and adapt programs to meet evolving needs.
- Maintain and manage an inventory of art supplies and equipment, ensuring that materials are readily available for classes and events. Oversee budgets and manage resources efficiently to maximize cost-effectiveness.
- Partner with the philanthropic department to strengthen the connection between art programs and the broader community. Ensure that art initiatives align with fundraising goals and support the organization’s mission.
- Comply with applicable federal, state and local laws, rules, and regulations; maintains knowledge of and follows all Plymouth Place policies and procedures.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings.
- Attends in-service and education programs.

Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in art therapy, Fine Arts, Music Therapy, Drama Therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, or a related field recommended.
- Minimum 1–3 years of experience in arts-based programming, therapy, or education.
- Certification or licensure (e.g., Board-Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC), Music Therapist (MT-BC), or equivalent) recommended.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Demonstrated experience as an art specialist in senior living or similar role.
- Excellent skills related to social perceptiveness and active listening.
- Knowledge of various creative modalities, including visual arts, music, dance, drama, and writing.
- Resourcefulness and problem-solving aptitude.
- Ability to adapt programs to meet the needs of diverse individuals and groups.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Solid organizational skills including attention to detail, critical thinking, and multi-tasking skills.
- Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with residents, families, and employees.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: The physical activities of this position constantly require effective talking, hearing, sitting, walking, and standing functions. The position also often involves work where sitting, standing or walking is required. The position also is often requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Must be able to perform activities with close visual acuity, such as reading a computer screen and reading print material. The functions of this position are conducted in a temperature-controlled environment.
OSHA Exposure Category: Category III – Position includes tasks that involve no exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues; would not be required to perform Category I tasks.
INTELLECTUAL/EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The occupant of this position must be able to perform the responsibilities of the position well under pressure. The position requires adaptability to performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure. This position requires the ability to deal with and find resolutions to problems and maintain a productive working relationship with employees and may be interrupted frequently to meet the needs and requests of others. It also requires adaptability to fluctuate between priorities daily while being responsive to needs as they arise.
