Job Summary
The Lab Specimen Processor is responsible for receiving, processing, and distributing laboratory specimens for testing. This role includes preparing specimens for analysis, entering data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), and ensuring accurate labeling and storage of specimens. The Lab Specimen Processor serves as a liaison between the laboratory and other hospital departments, maintaining specimen integrity and adhering to safety protocols.
Essential Functions
- Receive, inspect, and prioritize specimens for testing, ensuring accurate labeling and documentation.
- Enter patient, specimen, and testing information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Prepare specimens for testing via centrifugation and appropriate distribution.
- Maintain specimen integrity through proper storage and handling techniques.
- Resolve order and specimen discrepancies in collaboration with laboratory staff and providers.
- Load specimens onto laboratory instruments and assist with automation system troubleshooting.
- Prepare specimens for repeat or additional testing and process referrals as necessary.
- Dispatch specimens to appropriate laboratory departments or referral labs.
- Maintain accurate records of specimen processing activities and complete required documentation.
- Adhere to infection control protocols and maintain a clean and organized work area.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and specimen processing.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic knowledge of laboratory terminology and processing techniques.
- Proficiency in data entry and basic computer applications.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and adhere to safety protocols.
Education
- High school graduate or equivalent required
- Medical terminology education preferred
Licenses/Certifications
- None Required
Experience
- 1 year of laboratory experience preferred. Certain facilities may require prior laboratory experience based on operational needs, staffing models, or complexity of services provided.
- 1 year of medical terminology experience preferred; may be required depending on the specific needs of the hiring facility.
