About the Role

Description

   Perform hazardous duty as an Aerospace Physiology Specialist inside hypobaric and hyperbaric chambers, exposed to pressure equivalents of 165 feet of sea water (fsw) and 35,000 feet mean sea level (msl). Present formal training lectures to NASA astronauts, aircrew, flight surgeons, and test subjects on the various physiological hazards of flying and diving operations. Perform as medical monitors during pressurized Human in the Loop (HITL) testing events at various NASA facilities, providing support for the Medical Officers by conducting and assisting with basic medical evaluations, test documentation, and emergency treatment as first responder. Additional duties include performing administrative and maintenance tasks and entries into the Electronic Medical Records (EMR). 


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists in preparing daily assignments for medical coverage of the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL).
  • Performs as Physiological Training Instructor during hypobaric/hyperbaric chamber operations.
  • Acts as a medical test team member for hyperbaric/hypobaric chambers at the NBL and Crew Thermal System Division Chambers and other JSC test and evaluations.
  • Performs as a crew member for the NBL hypobaric chamber as inside observer, chamber operator, lock operator, recorder, crew chief, and lecture observer.
  • Performs as a crew member for the NBL hyperbaric chamber as inside tender, supervisor, chamber operator, timekeeper, and crew chief.
  • Assists the medical officer in pre-dive/flight physical examinations.
  • Assists and provides medical support to the medical officer as licensed.
  • Completes personal and student oxygen equipment inspections.
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports.
  • Performs as a Physiological Training Instructor, presents formal lectures to NASA Astronauts, aircrew members, flight surgeons, test subjects, NASA support personnel and FAA flying personnel.
  • Performs other assignments and duties as required.

Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Bachelors degree with at least six (6) years of related experience; or ten (10) years of equivalent related work experience.
  • Graduate of the Army, Navy, or Air Force Physiological Training Chamber specialist course.
  • Three (3) years practical experience teaching Aerospace Physiology, including operations and maintenance of low pressure chambers.

Desired:

  • Possess a thorough knowledge of emergency medical hyperbaric treatment, medical terminology and proper usage of medical supplies and medications.
  • Ability to complete/maintain EMT-Basic certification with Texas State licensure within 12 months.

SKILLS/TRAINING

Required:

  • Must be able to pass a NASA Lock Observer physical examination and continue to pass a NASA Lock Observer physical annually.
  • Basic maintenance experience with hypo/hyperbaric chambers.
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.
