Job Summary: The Technical Writer I is responsible for creating and maintaining high-quality documentation for Geographic Solutions’ software systems. This includes end-user guides, administrator manuals, release notes, and help files. Working closely with internal teams, including developers, business analysts, project managers, and other SMEs, the Technical Writer I ensures documentation is accurate, user-friendly, and aligned with internal standards. The Technical Writer I creates and maintains smaller-scale, less complex documentation. This entry-level role is designed for individuals developing their technical writing skills while working under the guidance of an experienced mentor or senior writer. This role also involves regularly reviewing and updating existing content to reflect product enhancements and evolving user needs, as well as assisting with functional boilerplate content and proposals when needed.
Viable candidates must be willing to work onsite at GSI's headquarters in Palm Harbor, Florida daily.
Key Responsibilities:
Documentation Development
- Create and maintain user-facing documentation, including user guides, quick reference guides, and admin manuals
- Capture and update visuals, including screenshots, diagrams, tables, and flowcharts
- Ensure consistency with branding, style, and formatting standards across all documents
- Ability to interpret technical information and document it clearly and concisely
Editing & Quality Assurance
- Proofread and edit documents for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and layout consistency
- Test documentation against the software to validate accuracy and completeness
- Identify and report usability issues discovered through the documentation process and suggest software changes when identifying usability enhancements
Collaboration & Review
- Coordinate document reviews with team members and subject matter experts
- Conduct peer reviews and provide constructive feedback
- Communicate effectively with developers, BAs, and PMs to clarify functionality
Content Management & Process Improvement
- Maintain version history and documentation archives
- Contribute to the development and refinement of documentation standards, tools, and processes
- Support the proposal team by updating and maintaining boilerplate content
Requirements
Work Experience / Knowledge:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word (2019/O365), including styles, templates, cross-referencing, index tags, and complex graphics (e.g., drawing canvases, layout options, etc.)
- Familiarity with TechSmith SnagIt, Adobe Acrobat, MS Visio, Excel, and SharePoint
- Understanding of accessibility guidelines and user-centered design principles for documentation
- 1–4 years of experience in technical writing or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience working with online help systems such as MadCap Flare
Qualifications / Certifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, English, Communications, Education, Computer Science, or a related field
- Relevant certifications (e.g., CPTC, UX writing, accessibility) are a plus
Special Requirements:
This role may require occasional evening and weekend hours to meet critical deadlines.
