Fairview St John's Hospital in Maplewood has now opened their Respiratory Care Assistant role for the 2026 year! This is a great opportunity for any student currently enrolled in a Respiratory Therapy program in their junior or senior year to gain knowledge, skills, and real-world practice during your program! Respiratory Care Assistants may also be eligible for the MN Dual Training Grant to assist with educational costs while working in the role.
A person in this position would provide routine Respiratory Therapy modalities to patients as appropriate based on this student role and their competency level. The Respiratory Therapy Assistant would be required to show competency in Respiratory Therapy modalities prior to assuming RT role and will work under the direct supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist.
Schedule: Students must average 16 hours every two weeks. Every other weekend: 8-hour day shift 06:30-15:00 is required.
Performs respiratory therapy duties under the direct supervision of a licensed Respiratory Therapist as assigned, including but not limited to:
- Maintains changes and discontinues medical gas.
- Performs aerosol and humidity therapies.
- Administers routine airway clearance.
- Administers lung expansion therapies.
- Monitors Bronchial drainage.
- Performs ABG (Arterial Blood Gases)
- Participates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Provides patients, families, and other providers in disease management education.
- Reviews patient’s chart to make recommendations for Plan of care
- Interpret spirometry results
Demonstrates effective communication.
- Communicates effectively with CPS staff and other Interprofessional team members.
- Strives to provide excellent customer service
- Use of AIDET (acknowledge, introduce, duration, explanation, and thanks) with patient and families
- Listen and understand customer needs
- Uses error prevention skills
Required Education
- Student in good standing in CoARC approved program for Respiratory Therapy
License/Certification/Registration
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
