About the Role

Overview

The ER Assistant through communication, requisitioning, and management of supplies and equipment, compliments the activities of the nursing staff, patients, physicians, other hospital departments, and visitors. He/She performs general receptionist and clerical duties in order to facilitate efficient functioning of the Emergency Department

Responsibilities

Greets patients and families courteously.

 

Answers questions or finds someone who can.

 

Answers the telephone identifying self and area within 3 rings.

 

Relays messages accurately and timely.

 

Understands and demonstrates concern for patient confidentiality.

 

Operates the EMS Radio and hand held radio

 

Acts as resource person to nursing staff and support services.

 

Notifies nursing staff of STAT orders.

 

Uses the computer to enter orders.

 

Faxes orders to the pharmacy when necessary or appropriate.

 

Transcribes orders correctly when needed.

 

Transcribes STAT orders correctly in times of Cerner Downtime procedures.

 

Demonstrates understanding of acceptable abbreviations by using them when transcribing on the medication administration record in times of Cerner Downtime procedures.

 

Accurately prints ED Register Log

 

Files forms in patients’ charts as required.

 

Admits patients.

 

Transfers patients.

 

Discharges patient.

 

Orders supplies from stores using Lawson system.

 

Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job related hazards.

 

Follows the hospital exposure control plans/Bloodborne and airborne pathogens.

 

Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

 

Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intradepartmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.

 

Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.

Qualifications

Minimum Education

• High school Diploma or equivalent GED• Vocational or AS in Secretarial type positions (preferred)

 

Minimum Work Experience

2 years experience (preferred)

 

Required Licenses/Certifications

BLS Required within 30 days of employment

 

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

• Ability to communicate effectively and document information accurately.• Ability to deal efficiently and effectively with a wide variety of individuals.• Knowledge of basic medical terminology preferred.• Basic computer knowledge is preferred.• Understanding of data collection is preferred.• Ability to requisition supplies is preferred.
