Who is Good Samaritan?

Good Samaritan Community Services is a 501(c) 3 organization that serves communities underserved by traditional social support. We provide a continuum of integrated services to more than 3,500 individuals from the age of 6 weeks to 90+. This includes more than 1,200 families via offices and locations in San Antonio, Brownsville, and other parts of South and West Texas.  

 

Good Samaritan began as mission of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in 1939 and became an institution of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas in 1951 under the leadership of Bishop Everett Jones. Since the inception of our ministry, we have focused on serving the health and education, and social and emotional needs of our neighbors.  

 

Our mission is to "actively serve as a catalyst for change, supporting youth, individuals, and families by providing excellent community services to overcome economic poverty.” We do this through a continuum of services designed to stabilize families, establish nurturing relationships, and foster self-sufficiency in those we serve through the programs and support we provide via our Family Services and Youth and Teen Departments.  

Position Summary

The Parent Educator implements the PAT model, emphasizing parent child interaction, development-centered parenting, and family well-being in their work with families. Utilizing the PAT Foundational Curriculum in culturally sensitive ways, the parent educator partners facilitates and reflects with families. Primary responsibilities include conducting home visits to meet with parents, child and family screenings, connecting families to community resources, and hosting monthly group connections.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college or university required with specialization in Social Work or Early Childhood Education preferred.
  • At least 1 year of supervised experience working with parents, providing case management services, working with families at risk, teen parents, and/or families from diverse backgrounds required.
  • Current and valid driver's license and a reliable form of transportation are required.
  • Extensive working knowledge of child development, community resources, and positive parenting techniques preferred.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred, according to business needs and requirements.

Essential Duties & Functions

  • Demonstrate adherence to the CORE values of Good Samaritan Community Services.
  • Build trusting relationships with clients to keep them engaged. Establish a rapport and empower families by building on their strengths.
  • Conduct intake and enrollment of participants according to program operating procedures.
  • Plan for and conduct home visits with assigned clients, virtually or on campus. Give educational guidance of the individual child’s development using the PAT Foundational Curriculum Schedule.
  • Maintain accurate record keeping and knowledge of client file documentation policy.
  • Conduct developmental screenings/screening summaries (ASQ and ASQ-SE and vision/hearing screenings for each child in the program) in a timely manner and/or according to deadlines.
  • Administer parenting inventories (PFS, EPDS, RAT, PICCOLO) to each client at enrollment, and at set intervals thereafter. Experience with family and child assessments/screenings preferred.
  • Connect families to in-house or community resources to address needs and maintain knowledge of local resources. Collaborate, network, and partner with community agencies to provide services to clients.
  • Promote community awareness of programs through participation in outreach and recruitment efforts.
  • Submit accurate PIERS documentation to report new enrollments, home visits, exits and referrals and service touch points for each family being served.
  • Help parents and children transition to other services, such as, preschool or kindergarten.
  • Lead, plan, assist, and/or conduct Group Connection meetings monthly.
  • Collaborate, network, and partner with community agencies to provide services to clients.
  • Collect data and work with Data Support Team to for reporting purposes to maintain GSCS and MIECHV contract guidelines.
  • Obtain competency-based professional development and renew parent educator certification annually and any other training required by contract guidelines.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement plans and focus groups as required by contract guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on program and/or agency needs.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

Manages volunteers as assigned by the PAT Manager.

 

Work Environment and Physical Demands

This job operates in a professional office environment, as well as clients’ homes, and childcare classrooms.

While performing the duties of this job, you must be able to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, type, and/or operate a motor vehicle. You must be able to lift up to 25 pounds and adjust your focus with good hand-eye coordination. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Travel and Hours

Occasional local travel is required (25%). This is a year-round, full-time position. Days and hours of work are generally Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Occasional long hours and weekend work may be required depending on the nature of the special actions, projects, or events.

 

Benefits and Compensation

Salary range is $17.00 per hour. A competitive compensation package will be offered for this position based upon the successful candidate’s education, skills, and experience.
