Bishop McNamara High School has an opening to join the Science department as a long-term substitute teacher for the 2025-2026 school year teaching chemistry and forensic science.   You will be supported by a collaborative and experienced team of educators.


We develop young people whose scientific knowledge, understanding, and skills empower them to solve the world’s most pressing problems. We aim for our students to understand the role science plays in their lives, and accept their responsibility to act in ways that preserve and improve our global environment. Our courses teach students to design and conduct experiments that investigate scientific questions, analyze data both graphically and statistically, and communicate persuasively. Students who successfully complete our course requirements will have met the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) with an emphasis on the physical and life sciences. 

Requirements

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Developing lesson plans in the relevant subject area and grade, and ensuring all lessons align with curriculum objectives.
  • Drawing up classroom procedures and safety regulations and ensuring all students understand them.
  • Using a range of teaching materials and methods to advance student learning.
  • Providing additional support and interventions for students as needed, based on their readiness and learning profile.
  • Preparing students for tests, exams, presentations, experiments, and other assessments.
  • Grading assessments and providing feedback and reports to students and parents.
  • Attending staff and parent meetings to provide helpful recommendations or voice concerns.
  • Establishing rapport and professional relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Supervising students in class, during events, and on field trips.
  • Monitoring students’ overall wellbeing and liaising with school counselors and other staff members when there are concerns or issues.
  • Attending ongoing learning initiatives like workshops, lectures, conferences, and other events where you are able to expand education networks.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in science, mathematics, engineering, education, or related fields
  • Commitment to development of the whole student, including well-being and character, in alignment with the Holy Cross tradition of education

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching in a high school, with demonstrated expertise in differentiated instruction
  • Experience using technology to extend and enhance learning in a 1:1 BYOD environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.

LOCATION/TRAVEL: While Bishop McNamara High School is located in Forestville, MD, you may live anywhere in the surrounding region, but be willing to make any commute to the school.
