About the Role

Reports To: Site Director 

Location: Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry

Employment Status: Part-Time / Non-Exempt 

Schedule: Monday – Friday 4:00-6:00pm, aligned with afterschool program hours, summer hours vary 

Position Summary 

The Youth Development Professional (YDP) is responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate environment for youth in the afterschool program. Under the guidance of the Site Director, the YDP implements activities that support members’ academic, social, and emotional growth while fostering strong relationships with youth and their families. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

• Support members in academic achievement, college and career readiness, and personal and social development through mentoring and small group guidance. 

• Plan and implement engaging, high-yield activities across program areas including STEM, arts, technology, recreation, and leadership development. 

• Maintain a safe, structured, and welcoming environment by supervising assigned spaces and effectively managing behavior. 

• Build and maintain positive, supportive relationships with youth, serving as a consistent role model. 

• Assist with homework support, assignment tracking, and collaboration with classroom teachers to reinforce academic success. 

• Promote and stimulate program participation by encouraging member engagement and supporting recruitment efforts. 

• Coordinate with the Site Director to provide activity schedules, program reports, and feedback on member needs and progress. 

• Support the planning and execution of Club events, theme days, and special activities. 

• Supervise and guide volunteers and community guests participating in program delivery. 

• Recommend new program offerings and help identify community partners or resources to enhance Club experiences. 

• Complete assessments of program impact and member progress using formal and informal tools. 

• Ensure cleanliness and order of Club spaces and model respect for shared environments. 

• Assist with administrative duties including attendance tracking, snack distribution, and setup/cleanup. 

• May be required to drive a Club vehicle for member transport or offsite programs. 

• Collaborate with staff, families, and community partners to deliver high-quality youth services. 

• Participate in training sessions, staff meetings, and Club-wide events as needed. 

• Perform additional duties as assigned to support Club operations. 

Skills/Knowledge Required 

• College diploma and Teaching Credential. 

• Knowledge of youth development; ability to motivate and provide guidance through positive relationships. 

• Ability to relate to the general public, parents, and Club members in a friendly and professional manner. 

• Demonstrated ability to communicate Club policies and implement guidance and discipline procedures. 

• Ability to organize and supervise participants to maintain a safe, welcoming environment. 

• Valid South Carolina Driver’s License. 

• Strong verbal and written communication skills. 

• Demonstrated energy, enthusiasm, and commitment in working with youth, families, and the community. 

• Experience working with youth in a group setting preferred. 

• Ability to lead engaging activities and foster a positive group dynamic. 

• Must pass background check and meet any local licensing requirements.

This position works both indoors and outdoors (weather permitting) and moderate physical activities may be required. Due to the fact that the facility serves children and teens, the noise level in the work environment is moderate.
