About the Role

Description

NAYA Family Center is seeking a dependable, trauma-informed On-Call Maintenance Specialist to support the khwat yaka haws shelter. This role ensures a safe, functional, and welcoming environment by responding to routine maintenance needs and repair emergencies, including some outside of normal business hours. Strong problem-solving skills, sound judgment, and the ability to determine when outside contractors are needed are essential, as is cultural humility and an understanding of trauma-informed care and houselessness within Native communities.

NAYA offers an exceptional benefits package, including free medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees (with affordable options for family members), a 401(k) retirement plan with a 6% match, paid vacation, and 16 paid holidays. This is an on-call position that may include evenings and occasional weekends as needed.

The pay for this position is $30.30 an hour.

Who You Are

  • Ideally, you have work or lived experience within Native communities—or a strong commitment to learning Native history and understanding the Urban Native experience.
  • You have maintenance experience and take pride in keeping spaces safe, functional, and well cared for.
  • You bring a calm, solutions-oriented mindset to urgent or unexpected situations.
  • You understand the importance of working with respect, discretion, and professionalism in a shelter environment.
  • You are comfortable working independently while staying in communication with management when decisions or outside support are needed.
  • You approach your work through a trauma-informed lens and understand how environment and safety impact people who have experienced instability or crisis.
  • You’re organized, dependable, and able to prioritize tasks, especially when multiple needs arise at once.
  • You communicate clearly with staff and leadership, explaining issues and repair options in a straightforward, respectful way.
  • You understand confidentiality, maintain professional boundaries, and show up consistently for your team.
  • You’re comfortable using basic computer tools such as email, word processing, and spreadsheets

What You’ll Do

  • Respond to routine and emergency maintenance needs for the khwat yaka haws shelter, including availability outside of normal business hours when needed
  • Perform repairs and upkeep on cabinetry, bunk beds, washers and dryers, flooring, stair treads, walls, and other building components
  • Address safety and cosmetic concerns such as loose flooring, carpet damage, wall scuffs, and general wear and tear as quickly and soundly as possible
  • Complete basic plumbing repairs, including unclogging toilets and drains, fixing minor leaks, and replacing washers
  • Safely operate hand and power tools used for carpentry, plumbing, and general maintenance work
  • Clean carpets as needed in coordination with shelter management
  • Maintain a scheduled maintenance log and document completed and pending work
  • Repaint and repair minor wall damage when needed
  • Assess repair needs and consult with management when an outside contractor or licensed professional is required
