About the Role

Position Overview:  

The Temporary Maintenance Technician/Custodial Services team member supports the daily operations of our facilities by performing light maintenance, routine cleaning, and basic repairs. The Gathering Place serves women, gender-diverse people, and their children experiencing homelessness and/or poverty.   This position plays an important part in maintaining an environment that is trauma informed and ensures our spaces remain safe, clean, and welcoming for staff, members, and visitors. The position also assists with coordinating outside maintenance vendors as needed.

Core Accountabilities 

  • Demonstrate respect, cultural humility, and knowledge of trauma informed care in interactions with shelter guests, staff, and collaborative partners 
  • Perform repairs such as replacing light bulbs, rehanging and tightening fixtures, patching small holes, and minor carpentry tasks 
  • Support annual maintenance activities, including inspections, equipment checks, and preparing facilities for seasonal weather changes 
  • Respond to basic plumbing issues, including plunging toilets and clearing simple clogs 
  • Perform basic outdoor maintenance and light landscaping, as needed  
  • Conduct routine inspections to identify and respond to maintenance needs and report issues promptly 
  • Assist with moving furniture, equipment, or supplies as needed 
  • Assist with scheduling and coordinating external maintenance vendors 
  • Provide access to facilities and oversee vendor work when required 
  • Communicate updates, issues, or delays to assigned supervisor 
  • Reports safety hazards and facility concerns immediately 
  • Follow all safety procedures and use proper protective equipment

Requirements 

  • Experience in custodial work, general maintenance, or a related field required 
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, light repairs, and cleaning practices 
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks such as climbing, bending, standing, and carrying equipment 
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently 
  • Reliability, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining a safe, clean environment 
  • Lived experience of homelessness, housing instability, or poverty a plus. 
  • Current knowledge of how to operate a computer and other office machinery, such as a copy machine or printer, and office software, such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and other programs
