Pop-Up Strategy Contributor – Email Growth (Volunteer)
Note: This is a remote, part-time volunteer position. Please do not apply if you are only seeking paid employment.
Bring creative, data-informed ideas to help grow our email list and deepen engagement.
We’re looking for a Pop-Up Strategy Contributor to explore and test creative ways to increase email signups. You don’t need to be a full-time UX expert or growth designer — just someone with ideas, curiosity, and a sense of how people behave online.
Who We Are
WhoWhatWhy is a nonprofit investigative news organization producing deep-dive journalism on the most pressing issues of our time. We’re powered by skilled volunteers and a small core staff — from students to seasoned pros — who believe in ethical, independent journalism free from corporate or political influence.
About the Role
As a Pop-Up Strategy Contributor, you’ll:
- Research and report on best practices from other organizations
- Help brainstorm different pop-up types (exit intent, time-delay, scroll-based, etc.)
- Suggest designs, copy, and timing ideas based on user behavior
- Work with Rick Gregory and the team to test early versions and refine approaches
- Help develop a playbook or checklist of what works best
What We’re Looking For
- Interest in user behavior, design thinking, and audience psychology
- Curiosity about how digital engagement tools work (no coding needed!)
- Some familiarity with pop-ups, email signup flows, or UX trends
- Creative thinker who’s also comfortable working with feedback and iteration
- Bonus if you’ve worked in growth, digital marketing, or conversion design — but not required
What You’ll Gain
- Hands-on experience contributing to digital engagement strategy
- Collaboration with a forward-thinking team working at the intersection of design and journalism
- Flexible, remote schedule that works with your availability
- A chance to test creative ideas and learn from what works
Commitment
We ask for a commitment of 5–7 hours per week and a minimum of 6 months. Schedules are flexible and designed around collaboration and experimentation.
