About the Role
Summary

This position coordinates patient and chart activities and collects pertinent patient data. Assesses and enters proper charges for all care given in the Emergency Room into the computer. Performs miscellaneous related duties and other duties as assigned.

 

**This is a temporary position. The Unit Assistant who accepts this position must be able to commit to the schedule dictated by leadership in the department for 3 to 6 months. The individual will be a direct employee of MyMichigan Health. When the temporary position is no longer utilized, as long as the employee is in good standing, they will be able to apply to other positions within MyMichigan Health.**


Responsibilities

(45%)* Greets and notifies nurse when patients arrive for treatment. Collects pertinent patient and demographic data and enters it into the computer. Obtains signature for authorization of Medicare, Medicaid, and all other payers.

 

(30%)* Orders tests from ancillary departments via multiple computer programs. Adds or deletes consulting physician names on chart. Sends properly labeled specimens to the lab, making sure patients are properly identified with ID bracelets for lab studies. Communicates orders by phone regarding patient.

 

(25%)* Records information in ER logbook. Makes bed arrangements for admits to the medical center. Prepares paperwork to go with patients who are transferred to other facilities.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Notifies police/sheriff department of any assaults, suspected child abuse, rapes, domestic violence or any other injuries inflicted other than accidentally.

 

Notifies animal shelter or sheriff department of all animal bites.

 

Participates in the orientation of new personnel to the unit.

 

Assists in general cleanliness around triage area and patient care areas.

 

Orders and stocks secretarial supplies.

 

Maintains current copy of “on call” physicians.

 

Directs patients or families to other medical center areas.

 

Distributes incoming mail on a daily basis.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of medical terminology and medical office practices, policies and procedures as normally acquired through experience working in the medical center or similar setting.

 

Typing skills and basic personal computer knowledge needed to enter patient information.

 

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear an understandable manner.

 

Maintains confidentiality with all patient information and data obtained.

 

Mandatory tuberculosis (TB) testing must be done annually according to MIOSHA (Michigan Occupational Safety Health Administration) standards. Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.

 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

 

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

 

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

 

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

 

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

 

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.  Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

 

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

 

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling.  May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

 

Physical Demand Level: Light.  Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
