Compensation: $20.00 per hour   Employment Status Regular, part-time  
Work Schedule: 12-15 hours per week  FLSA Classification: Non-exempt

Stars provides a variety of college preparatory and educational programs to Pasadena-area youth. Our goal is to affirm, equip, and embolden our students for a life of success, providing them with an inclusive support system of peers and mentors. 


About the Position 

This position is responsible for safely transporting K–5 students from partner schools to Stars program sites using a Stars-owned van. The Van Driver interacts directly with youth and is designated as a Mandated Reporter under California law. 


Holidays and Benefits Eligibility
This position is not eligible for employer-sponsored benefits or paid holidays, except as required by law. All legally mandated benefits, including California Paid Sick Leave, will be provided. 


Work Schedule and Availability 

Tuesday through Thursday, 2:00 PM to 4:00PM 

In addition to scheduled driving hours, the employee is required to maintain availability for the following work-related activities: 

Weekly staff meetings on Mondays from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM 

Tuesday morning produce pickup, typically between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM 

Attendance at organizational events as needed  

Schedule may vary slightly based on school dismissal times, program needs, or traffic conditions. 


Primary Responsibilities 

  • Transport students safely and punctually from schools to program sites. 
  • Operate a Stars 10-passenger van in compliance with all traffic laws and organizational safety policies. 
  • Conduct basic pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections. 
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the vehicle. 
  • Maintain accurate driving and mileage logs. 
  • Report all maintenance needs or safety concerns promptly. 
  • Assist with transporting equipment. 
  • Model appropriate behavior and maintain positive, respectful interactions with students at all times. 
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and organizational information. 

Qualifications 

  • Dependable and punctual, with the ability to consistently meet the driving schedule. 
  • Valid California Class C driver license with completion of a van safety certification (training provided by Stars), or a valid California Class A or B driver license. 
  • Ability to safely operate a 10-passenger van. 
  • Acceptable driving record as determined by Stars and its insurance carrier. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work positively with children. 
  • Spanish-speaking ability highly desirable. 
  • Authorization to work in the United States, as required by federal law. 

Mandated Reporter & Background Requirements 

  • This position is designated as a Mandated Reporter under CANRA. 
  • Required to complete mandated reporter training upon hire and as required thereafter. 
  • Employment is contingent upon successful DOJ/FBI Live Scan fingerprinting and DMV driving record review. 

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements 

  • Work around students for extended periods (sitting, standing, kneeling, running, climbing stairs). 
  • See, hear, and respond quickly in moderate to high noise environments. 
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally. 
  • Work outdoors in varying weather during student pick-up and drop-off. 
  • Communicate effectively in English, verbally and in writing. 
  • Perform basic math, maintain records, and use basic technology (computers, mobile devices).
