About the Role

Description

Description

Do you enjoy building and refining automated test frameworks that ensure software quality day in and day out? Are you the type who dreams in test cases and can’t help but break down complex requirements into repeatable scripts? Do you thrive on collaboration with product and engineering teams to ensure every feature meets (and exceeds) expectations? If so, read on…

I’m the QA Manager at RTA, and I’m looking for a Software Quality Engineer to own the automation test suite for our software—while occasionally rolling up your sleeves to do manual testing as needed. This role is about creating reliable automated tests, coaching teammates on best practices, and translating complex business requirements into robust test scenarios. If this sounds like you, you could be the peanut butter to our jelly! Read on and apply!

To set expectations clearly: As part of the QA team, you will be expected to contribute to manual testing efforts as needed, ensuring features are thoroughly validated and meet quality standards prior to release.

What We’re Looking For

In general, someone who:

  • Is passionate about serving others.
  • Takes pride in being a QA professional and finds fulfillment in seeing the entire product succeed and grow.
  • Is comfortable being part of a team that thrives on healthy conflict. People with thin skin need not apply. No, seriously.
  • Passionately cares about our clients by helping them be more successful. Our clients are fleet managers, parts clerks, and automotive technicians who maintain everything from squad cars to school buses—so everyone comes home safely at the end of the day.
  • Thinks of themselves less, while not thinking less of themselves. They are other-centric, compassionate, and self-assured.
  • Is willing to lift boxes, clean floors, and hold doors if that’s what it takes to get something done, because no job is beneath them.
  • Takes ownership and initiative in their job. They identify how to make processes and products better without waiting to be told.
  • Loves to read, learn, grow, and stretch themselves. Bonus points for each book they’ve read by Patrick Lencioni!

Specifically for This Job, Someone Who:

  • Has strong automation testing skills in Java, JavaScript and Node.js, using Selenium (or similar tools like Playwright, Cypress, etc.).
  • Is comfortable with manual testing for exploratory, ad-hoc, and one-off scenarios that don’t warrant automation.
  • Collaborates closely with product and engineering teams to translate complex business and functional requirements into automated test cases.
  • Understands RESTful APIs, microservices, or SOA architectures, enabling effective API-level automation.
  • Has working knowledge of MSSQL (or other SQL databases) to validate data integrity as part of tests.
  • Uses Docker and AWS for setting up test environments, running containerized tests, or deploying automation pipelines.
  • Leverages GitHub for version control, code reviews, and continuous integration of test suites.
  • Is well-versed in CI/CD pipelines, integrating automated tests into the build process, ensuring that failing tests block releases.
  • Communicates effectively, providing clear, concise feedback to developers and product managers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Automate, Automate, Automate: Build and maintain robust test frameworks using Java-based tools (e.g., Selenium), ensuring coverage of both frontend/UI and backend/API.
  • Manual Testing (As Needed): Perform hands-on testing for complex or one-off scenarios where automation isn’t yet in place.
  • Test Strategy & Planning: Partner with product managers and engineering leads to prioritize testing efforts based on risk and impact.
  • Code Review & Collaboration: Participate in peer reviews of automated tests, and provide constructive feedback on QA best practices.
  • Performance & Load Testing (Bonus): Identify opportunities to stress-test our software, ensuring it scales gracefully.
  • Reporting & Metrics: Track testing progress, defects, and automation coverage; communicate these metrics across the team and leadership.
  • Continuous Improvement: Proactively suggest improvements to testing methods, tools, and processes.

Key Results Areas (aka the Job Outcomes)

  • Reduced Production Bugs: Thorough test coverage leads to fewer bugs slipping into production and higher customer satisfaction.
  • Efficient Releases: Automation catches regressions early, enabling teams to deploy new features confidently and quickly.
  • Clear Collaboration: Product and engineering teams have precise, actionable test feedback when issues arise.
  • Scalable Automation: Test suites are well-structured, easily maintainable, and consistently integrated into CI/CD pipelines.

Industry-Standard Certifications (Nice-to-Have)

  • ISTQB (Foundation, Advanced, or Test Manager)
  • CSTE (Certified Software Tester)
  • Certified Agile Tester
  • Other relevant QA/Automation certifications

These certifications aren’t required—but they definitely earn you bonus points if you’ve got them!

Qualifications

OK, the “boring” HR part that’s necessary:

  • 5+ years of software testing experience, with significant focus on automation.
  • Proficiency with Java, JavaScript, Node.js, Selenium (or similar automation frameworks), MSSQL, Docker, AWS, and GitHub.
  • Bachelor’s Degree not required but preferred, especially in a technical or engineering-related field.
