About the Role

Description

In accordance with Vogel Bros. Building Co.’s beliefs / values / mission / vision, the Estimator is responsible for assisting with preparing concept budgets, milestone budgets, and lump sum bid estimates.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review project plans, specifications, and technical documents to develop accurate estimates, assigned trade responsibilities, and subcontractor coverage, for assigned projects
  • Identify and quantify all cost types, such as time, labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, and other cost elements
  • Identify the cost of equipment, materials and labor for self-performed work
  • Help prepare thorough, accurate and timely estimates utilizing various computer software programs
  • Prepare initial project schedules and cash flow schedules for all projects bid
  • Prepare accurate estimates with the necessary level of detail for all stages of design: Conceptual, Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Documents
  • Effectively communicate and build relationships with both internal and external customers, subcontractors, equipment representatives, suppliers, and design teams, to fully coordinate project expectations
  • Support the Operations Department team (such as Project Managers and Project Engineers) to prepare estimates and supporting documentation for the purpose of bidding, planning, and scheduling work
  • Assist in maintaining and utilizing a historical cost database of equipment pricing, unit pricing, wage rates and cost metrics, to be used as reference for future projects
  • Assist with bid deliveries (both electronic and in-person) and bid openings, as applicable
  • As needed, attend on-site pre-bid meetings to gain knowledge of clients expectations, specific project requirements, on-site conditions, etc.
  • Make phone calls to potential bidders.
  • Maintain Database of subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Create and publish Invitations to Bid and Addendum in Construct Connect.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or Construction-related field preferred
  • 2 or more years of relevant work experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Preferred experience: Estimation of water and wastewater treatment plants, heavy civil construction, commercial buildings; Estimation of self-performed work; Working with BIM programs; and Understanding of regional construction practices

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Must have strong analytical and mathematical skills
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and means of transportation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to read blue prints and technical documents
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and perform effectively despite sudden deadline and priority changes
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with willingness and ability to accept responsibility, work as a team player, and take initiative to improve personal and interpersonal skills
  • Ability and willingness to learn new systems that increase team efficiency using LEAN principles
