InterCare is searching for a full-time Interpreter - Spanish to English, to join our team at our Benton Harbor Women's Health Center location! Work Schedule:
Typically Monday - Thursday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with Friday and Evening Hours as necessary. - NO WEEKENDS!! NO HOLIDAYS!!

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of High School Diploma or equivalent with basic level of reading, writing, and mathematical skills.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English at a level of proficiency expected by InterCare through language assessment.
  • Knowledge of vocabulary in English and Spanish applicable to the area of interpretation.
  • Understands and applies the standards of practice and ethics related to the field of interpretation as developed by the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC).

Primary Accountability

A Spanish Interpreter is responsible for providing accurate interpretation between patient, family members when applicable, and InterCare staff. Interpretation is defined as relaying messages verbally from one language to another and does not include written translation. Additionally, the Spanish Interpreter will serve as a cultural mediator and patient advocate if necessary.


Description of Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides accurate English/Spanish interpretation for verbal exchanges.
  • Speaks proficiently, fluently and clearly in English and Spanish.
  • Interprets message without adding or omitting any information.
  • Uses appropriate vocabulary for the clinical area for which providing interpreting services.
  • Manages the flow of the session to ensure accuracy of the interpreting.
  • Respects the level of difficulty of language, style, and tone being used by the person speaking.
  • Serves a cultural mediator and patient advocate as it relates to communication barriers.
  • Demonstrates cultural awareness; aspects of Hispanic/Latino culture that could potentially be a barrier in communication.
  • Continuously strives to learn evolving cultural elements of the people for whom they interpret.
  • Identifies cultural misunderstandings and professionally informs all parties involved.
  • Understands the resources available to Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and speaks up on their behalf to ensure linkage to those resources.
  • Provides assistance to the front office support staff in clerical tasks as needed.
  • Greets, assists, and routes patients appropriately and courteously.
  • Handles follow up phone calls to patients, particularly to Spanish speaking patients.
  • Assists with medical record scanning in the EHR
  • Maintains adequate exam room supplies.

Physical Demands

Job duties are performed in the typical office environment of the organization, which requires ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations. The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following:

  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, frequently sit, and lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, reach with arms & hands, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and manipulate (using keyboard, office equipment).
  • Visual acuity to use keyboard, operate office equipment, and read printed material and regularly required to talk and hear.
  • Must be able to hear and communicate with clients and staff on the telephone and those who are served in person.
  • Must have vision which is adequate to read clinical documentation, and watch trainings on a computer screen.
