About the Role

Description

Founded in 1901, The Virginia Zoo is located in Norfolk, VA and is home to more than 700 animals representing over 150 species. It resides on 53 acres and is mostly outdoors with an indoor World of Reptiles exhibit, 3 classrooms, and an indoor restaurant and gift shop.


The Virginia Zoo’s Education Department seeks enthusiastic and self-motivated individuals to facilitate the Zoo’s Summer Safar Camp program hosted at the Virginia Zoo!


The Virginia Zoo’s Summer Safari Camp Instructors provide campers with a fun, safe, and educational in-person camp experience. Instructors work collaboratively to facilitate preplanned curriculum that includes STEM activities, hikes around the zoo, and behind the scenes experiences.


This is a non-exempt, seasonal position. Up to 40 hours/week Monday - Friday from 8 AM- 4:30 PM.


The full camp season is 9 weeks

  • Training Week: June 15 - 19 *****
  • Camps: June 22 - August 21 ******

We will consider individuals who cannot work the entire season, but entire training week is mandatory.


Camp grade levels range from K - 8th Grade.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct all Summer Safari children’s day camps using the Zoo’s pre-written curriculum.
  • Attend training and prepare for all camp programs including cleaning education spaces, preparing materials, reviewing lesson plans, and providing feedback on lesson plans.
  • Work in cooperation with full-time and part-time Zoo staff in Education and other departments
  • Contribute professionally to a collaborative, innovative, and energetic work environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent teaching and interpretive skills

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working with children of all ages.
  • Background knowledge in life sciences, environmental science, education or a similar field, preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Be able to work outside in the summer months in varying weather
  • Be able to follow all zoo safety protocols
