Job Description

We're looking for a dedicated Senior Analytical Chemist to join our team at LGC in Guildford, UK. This is a unique opportunity for someone who is passionate about analytical chemistry and keen to contribute to a world-class research team!

This role includes assisting with chemical testing studies, developing methods, and validation in the Office of The Government Chemist. The individual will support the Team Leader in upholding the high standards of the Government Chemist function. This will be done by taking part in proficiency testing schemes, ongoing improvement projects, and understanding customer needs.

The successful candidate will be a well-organised, self-motivated individual with a high level of determination for tackling technical problems and managing essential instrumental troubleshooting. You'll be a consummate professional, a positive role model, an articulate communicator, a mentor, and a potential leader. You should demonstrate good attention to detail and maintain accurate records of analytical work. You should also be willing to question and improve upon existing laboratory processes.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure delivery of contracted work to the required quality and customer expectations.
  • Act as a point of reference for advice, training, and mentorship to Analytical Chemists.
  • Undertake laboratory analysis of samples to support all work streams.
  • Lead projects to develop and implement methods and equipment.
  • Keep accurate records and produce detailed reports.
  • Liaise with customers to update on progress, plan work, and provide advice and mentorship as needed.
  • Provide representation at customer meetings.
  • Contribute towards the maintenance and development of quality systems.
  • Work on projects within the broader team and put forward ideas to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve the quality of laboratory operations by collaborating with departments

Qualifications

  • Apply your solid background in Chemistry, at least at the degree level or equivalent, along with several years of hands-on experience in key techniques like HPLC, GC, ICP, and hyphenated methods. Experience in UV spectrometry and titration is also preferred.
  • Hands-on experience operating in an ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory setting is essential.
  • Apply your knowledge of technical analysis and report writing to draft reports.
  • Direct other Analytical Chemists in their work.
  • Possess experience in thoroughly analyzing data and be capable of suggesting appropriate courses of action when results fall short of required specifications (including quality control).
  • Prior experience in staff supervision is essential.
  • Experience in direct customer interaction is preferable.
