About the Role

The Clinical Application of Neuroscience (CAN) Lab of Western Psychiatric Hospital (https://www.canlab.pitt.edu/) is hiring a Research Specialist to provide research support in a laboratory conducting multi-dimensional studies of neural, cognitive, and affective aspects of emotional (dys)function and clinical trials research focused on novel neurocognitive interventions for depression and anxiety (e.g., neurofeedback, transcranial magnetic stimulation, intravenous infusion of ketamine or other compounds paired with cognitive training). This position provides F/T research assistance by interviewing participants; conducting neuroimaging (EEG, functional MRI), behavioral, and clinical research protocols; managing data and documentation collected during assessments; and providing lab management assistance to the Principal Investigators.

This position is grant funded.

Responsibilities:

  • Administer neurobehavioral assessments to research subjects, including the collection of questionnaire data, cognitive and neuropsychological assessments, and neuroimaging (EEG, fMRI).

  • Conduct clinical assessments/interviews with adolescent and adult research subjects focused on psychiatric and psychological functioning, as well as exposure to adverse life experiences such as trauma and discrimination.

  • Assistance in the collection, management, processing, and analysis of data from the research assessments, interviews, and questionnaires and in the management and delivery of related equipment.

  • Keep a flexible schedule to accommodate schedules of both research subjects and research facilities, including morning, evening, and weekend availability.

  • Perform in accordance with system-wide policy, procedure, competencies, and behaviors

  • Perform any other duties as assigned

  • Independently execute job functions for research protocol(s) including recruitment, scheduling appointments, obtaining written consent forms, collecting data by conducting phone or face to face interviews for research project(s)

  • Collaborate with senior research personnel regarding recruitment, data collection, outcomes of interviews, reports according to the needs of the study.



  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Psychology, Neuroscience, Sociology or related research field.

  • Minimum of one year of work experience in a research project and/or related clinical setting is required (can be unpaid experience).

  • Working knowledge of research methodology strongly preferred.

  • Ability to work flexible hours is required, including routinely working weekends and evenings.

  • Familiarity with computers and common software packages required.

  • Computer skills in data management, statistical analysis programs, or programming helpful but not required.

  • Ability to interact skillfully with clinical populations (both adolescents and adults).

  • Must have excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, interpersonal skills, and ability to prioritize among multiple tasks.

  • Previous experience with clinical trials, clinical patient settings, and/or clinical data collection or analysis are helpful but not required.
