Job Overview

Under the guidance of the Director of Quality/Compliance, the Pharmacy Compliance Specialist (referred to internally as Compliance Specialist) supports pharmacy activities associated with licensure and credentialing, regulatory compliance, quality, and policies and procedures to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality and fully compliant pharmacy services. This position reports directly to the Director of Quality/Compliance. This is a hybrid position with three (3) in-office days per week at the pharmacy’s Sterling, VA, location.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintain and track pharmacy and pharmacist licenses, renewals, and regulatory submissions.
  • Update and maintain required documentation for licensing bodies or payers.
  • Assist with investigations of all quality-related events (medication errors, complaints, HIPAA disclosures, etc.) to determine root cause.
  • Conduct routine internal audits under supervision—e.g., prescription accuracy checks, inventory receiving audits, and proper storage/labeling reviews.
  • Perform daily monitoring and corrections necessary to ensure compliance with state controlled substance reporting requirements.
  • Support the review and documentation of pharmacy practices, including assisting in reviewing and updating internal policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Ensure staff have access to the most current compliance-related documents.
  • Participate in activities related to the Quality Team and Compliance Committees and provides administrative and analytical support as needed.
  • Research and prepare responses to customer, third-party/PBM, government, and regulatory audits.
  • Collect and analyze data for quality assurance activities (e.g., medication error reporting, near-miss tracking) for internal stakeholders.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Professional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree, preferably in a health or life science field or 2+ years serving in a compliance role in a healthcare setting.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT), with a currently active Virginia pharmacy technician license or willingness to obtain within 18 months of hire.
  • Working knowledge of pharmacy workflow or experience in a similar workflow/production-based environment.
  • Experience with pharmacy dispensing software preferred.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy and healthcare laws, rules and requirements.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Ability to influence and gain buy-in from key stakeholders, especially in an environment where there may be competing priorities.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and confidentiality.
