Job Description

About Me

I am a 41-year-old man living with a C5 complete spinal cord injury following a car accident. I live with my partner and my rescue dog, Marty, who is a big part of my life. Before my injury, I was very active and enjoyed playing sports, particularly football. I loved running, cycling, spending time outdoors, and going to the gym most evenings after work. I also took pride in my career and the work I did. While my life has changed, I still enjoy socialising, going to the pub when I’m feeling up to it, and taking part in a good pub quiz. Family and friends are extremely important to me, and I value having people around me.

As a result of my spinal cord injury, I have significantly reduced sensation in my limbs, meaning I may not always perceive touch, pressure, or temperature. I experience frequent and sometimes unpredictable muscle spasms, which can be uncomfortable and may require a few moments for me to manage and regain control. I also have limited balance and can be prone to falling forward, so care and vigilance during transfers are essential.

Qualifications

What I’m Looking for in Support

I value workers who are reliable, punctual, and communicate clearly. Patience, understanding, respect, and discretion are very important to me. When assisting with transfers, you will need to be calm, attentive, and vigilant always to ensure my safety and comfort. I expect situations to be handled calmly and professionally, while always promoting choice, dignity, and respect. Accurate, timely, and factual record-keeping is essential.

I can feel anxious when working with new staff, confidence, competence, and professionalism from you make a significant difference as they help reassure me, calm my nerves, and allow me to focus better on my work and daily activities. Flexibility is important, as my needs can change. I place great importance on my independence, comfort, and overall well-being. Empowering me and supporting my sense of control helps me feel respected and valued.
