Description
The Schaefer internship and co-op program provides opportunities for students to apply classroom methodology to hands-on modeling and design. The student’s Schaefer advisor, mentor and the assigned project team coordinate to ensure the learning experience is relevant and challenging. Successful internships and co-op rotations may lead to full-time employment, as evidenced by our present staff of dedicated and talented structural engineers and modelers, many of whom were students here themselves. The internship position is full-time (40 hours/week) for approximately 3 months during the Spring semester of 2027.
Scope of Work
- Develop an understanding of load path and simple statics within basic structures.
- Work to create structural drawings from engineering designs to markups.
- Work closely with an assigned mentor who provides hands on support and guidance while working through real projects.
- Learn engineering software such as Revit and RAM Structural Systems for application on a variety of challenging projects.
- Participate in site visits and in-house training sessions with other engineers.
Qualifications
- Enrolled in Civil or Architectural Engineering program at an ABET accredited college.
- Preferred coursework covering topics such as structural analysis, loads and systems or equivalent, concrete design, and structural steel design.
- Experience in Revit is a plus.
Working conditions and physical requirements
This work is typically done within an office environment with occasional field work at project + construction sites. When field assignments are required, the working conditions + physical requirements for field staff apply.
- Normal core working hours will be 9 am – 4 pm but may vary depending on project demands.
- Overtime work may be required based on work deadlines.
- Ability to access + navigate construction sites; may require ability to climb + descend ladders or crawl through openings.
- Some travel may be required for this position: conducting site visits, working out of area, out of state or across the state as driven by project need.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
