Job Description
Our R&D team develops the next generation of Brainlab image-guided surgery and Digital O.R. platforms. These innovative medical devices form the physical foundation for Brainlab current and the future software solutions and must meet the highest standards of safety, performance, and regulatory compliance.
As a Senior Project Engineer, you take technical ownership of development projects within our surgical navigation portfolio. Your drive the development from concept through verification to a certified medical product, working in close collaboration with hardware, software, quality, and external partners. The role combines hands-on engineering, technical leadership, and project coordination in a regulated medical device environment.
Depending on experience level, the scope of responsibility may be adjusted. Junior or mid-level engineers with strong technical fundamentals and high development potential may also be considered and will be supported accordingly.
Key responsibilities:
- Take technical leadership and contribute to decision-making with targeted creativity and technical expertise
- Drive the product requirements engineering process by translating stakeholder input into compliant system, software, and hardware requirements
- Define, evaluate, and review technical concepts and architectures across disciplines (systems, software, electronics and mechanics)
- Coordinate internal and external development activities, including suppliers, development partners, and test houses
- Plan and support prototype build-up, component qualification, and design iterations
- Define, execute, and document verification activities; coordinate interdisciplinary troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis; and drive bug fixes or redesigns toward specification compliance
- Contribute substantially to design and development documentation according to applicable regulations and standards
- Act as a technical interface between several contributors, including hardware, software, quality management, and project management
You will work at the intersection of our platform development team, multiple software teams, regulatory functions, international suppliers and development partners. Clear communication, technical judgment, and structured decision-making are essential to succeed in this role.
Qualifications
- University degree in medical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, software engineering, physics, or a comparable technical field
- Several years of experience in medical device or regulated product development
- Solid understanding of system-level thinking and interdisciplinary development
- Experience contributing to development projects within cross-functional teams
- Strong technical skills with the ability to discuss details with engineers and align with management on high-level goals
- Experience with development documentation and verification activities in regulated environments
- Excellent communication skills in English and German
What sets you apart:
- You enjoy taking technical responsibility and driving topics to closure
- You are comfortable navigating complex systems and regulatory constraints
- You combine analytical thinking with a pragmatic, solution-oriented mindset
- You communicate clearly across disciplines and organizational boundaries
- You are motivated to grow—either as a senior technical contributor or toward broader technical leadership
We are also glad to interview engaged graduates who want to develop themselves in a successful and international company.
