As an Operating Engineer Crew Chief in Marine Maintenance (MM), you will lead and supervise a crew in performing a wide variety of manual labor and equipment operations, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with Port standards. You will plan, coordinate, and oversee daily field activities in support of the Port of Seattle’s Maritime Division, directing equipment operations, overseeing inspections, assigning and monitoring tasks, ensuring safety compliance, and performing field work as needed to support the crew.
- You will lead and direct crew members in operating a variety of equipment in support of planned construction projects, maintenance tasks, and exploratory work performed in response to specific events.
- You will oversee and participate in equipment operations used to inspect, assess, repair, and replace irrigation, sewer, drainage, hydrant, and related systems, ensuring work quality and compliance with applicable standards.
- You will supervise and coordinate excavation and site preparation activities, including breaking and removing paving and concrete, preparing foundations and stairs, and directing the operation of equipment such as telescopic handler forklifts, loaders, backhoes, skid steers, rollers, and similar machinery in support of maintenance and construction operations.
- You will serve as the primary point of contact in the field, communicating with supervisors, other departments, property tenants, contractors, and members of the public to coordinate work activities, provide status updates, exchange information, and resolve issues.
- You will ensure a safe work environment for crew members and the public by directing proper traffic control measures, including the placement of cones, barricades, and warning devices at work sites.
- You will ensure crew compliance with all Port of Seattle rules, policies, Marine Maintenance work rules, and applicable construction and safety regulations.
- You will perform journey-level Operator duties, interpret and work from technical drawings, and monitor the use of cell phones, email, and job tracking systems to receive work orders, monitor progress, and document daily activities to ensure the work is done.
- Experienced – You have five (5) years of experience in operating heavy construction equipment and vehicles. Additionally, you have two (2) years of experience in a supervisory role.
- Educated – You possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Desired – We hope you have experience managing and documenting Best Management Practices (BMPs), and that you are a Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (CESCL), have completed HAZWOPPER training, and hold OSHA 30 certification.

You have knowledge of construction means, methods and practices of respective trade and you have followed plans and drawings to guide the work you perform.
