Role Purpose
As part of our Hydrogen and Derivatives Research team, the Research Analyst will lead the tracking and analysis of the Chinese hydrogen and derivative market. More specifically, the analyst will focus on tracking of China's hydrogen and derivative projects as well as electrolyser market both domestically and China's role internationally. Using Wood Mackenzie’s proprietary data, models, and expertise, you will deliver China-focused insights and contribute to long-term outlooks of global supply-demand, cost, and price forecasts for the low-carbon hydrogen and derivative market. You will assess policy impacts, cost structures, and technology advancements to evaluate China's competitiveness. You will represent Wood Mackenzie externally, attending industry events, interacting with clients, and contributing to market insights.
Main Responsibilities
Maintain high-quality database of China's hydrogen and derivative project pipelines and electrolyser capacity build-out domestically and internationally.
Monitor and analyze evolving Chinese policies (national and provincial) and their implications for hydrogen and derivative markets, providing expert opinion and quantifying impacts on project economics and market development.
Assist the Valuations team in assessing the competitiveness of China's hydrogen and derivative projects by leveraging proprietary asset valuation work, levelized cost analyses, and comparisons with international markets.
Contribute to model development for electrolysers with specific focus on China's cost structures and technology advancements.
Present market outlooks and China-focused insights to clients and prospects, ensuring high-quality client service and positioning Wood Mackenzie as the leading authority on China's hydrogen market.
Strengthen research through data collection via surveys, interviews with Chinese and international stakeholders, and secondary research from Chinese-language and English sources.
Collaborate with internal teams and subject matter experts across Wood Mackenzie (including Asia Pacific, Global Hydrogen, and Derivatives teams) to develop and enhance China-focused content and integrate regional insights into global outlooks.
Knowledge and Experience
2+ years experience analyzing China's energy, chemicals, or industrial markets, with preference for hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, or related low-carbon technologies
Passionate about the hydrogen and derivatives industry and China's role in the global energy transition and decarbonisation
Strong familiarity with China's policy landscape (national and provincial level) and its importance in influencing the development of hydrogen and derivative markets
Familiarity with commodity demand forecasting, technology adoption curves, and technology cost modeling in the Chinese context
Understanding of China's industrial structure, project development cycles, and key stakeholders in the hydrogen value chain
Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities. Interested in using both qualitative and quantitative methods to answer market questions
Self-driven. Capable of switching between the roles of an individual contributor and a collaborator
Strong communication skills. Comfortable interacting with clients and industry stakeholders in both Chinese and international contexts
Mandarin language proficiency required for engaging with Chinese sources, stakeholders, and conducting primary research
An engaging nature, capable of connecting with co-workers, clients and industry stakeholders across different cultures and in a wide range of professional settings
A deep intellectual curiosity about China's strategic role in global markets and the impact of the broader business and geopolitical landscape

We are a hybrid working company, and the successful applicant will be expected to be physically present in the office at least two days per week to foster and contribute to a collaborative environment, but this may be subject to change in the future.
Due to the global nature of the team, a degree of flexible working will be required to accommodate different time zones.
