Established in 1986, Basin Recreation owns and manages nearly 2,300 acres of open space, has built and/or maintains 170 miles of trails, and works with Summit County, state, and local organizations on planning and conservation issues. We also operate an 87,000 square-foot indoor fieldhouse facility that serves over 265,000 visitors a year. Additionally, Basin Recreation owns and operates several outdoor park facilities, which include bike parks, a skate park, groomed cross-country trails, sports facilities, ponds, community areas, and dog parks. Job Summary

The Lead Instructor, Recreation position is responsible for assisting in the operation of recreational programs, activities, and customer service.


Minimum Qualifications

  • 21 years of age or older with a valid US driver’s license. 
  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Have or obtain CPR and First Aid certifications within four (4) weeks of hire.

The successful applicant must pass a required pre-employment background check and subsequent mandatory background checks in accordance with current District policy requirements.

Preferred but not required:

  • Experience teaching and/or coaching a variety of recreational activities.
  • Basic skill level of activities being offered.
  • Experience in programming camps, athletics, or education.

Essential Functions

The following duties and responsibilities are intended to be representative of the work performed by the incumbent(s) in this position and are not all-inclusive.   • Assist with recreational programming of camps, athletics programs, and activities.
  • Provide developmentally age-appropriate instruction to program participants.
  • Conduct athletic games, activities, tournaments, and camps.
  • Explain rules and regulations, keep score, officiate sporting events, and provide assistance as needed.
  • Monitor participants’ play and conduct and encourage participation. 
  • Assist with scheduling, recruitment, communication, and marketing for programs.
  • Ensure fields and facilities are ready for scheduled programs. 
  • Monitor the site throughout the program.
  • Communicate with staff and program participants in a clear and respectful manner.
  • Assist participants in the case of injury or illness; ensure the safety of participants at all times. 
  • Encourage respect for personal property, equipment, and facilities.
  • Assist with surveys at the end of programs.
  • Act as a liaison between department staff and patrons.
  • Monitor field activities and group reservations as assigned on schedule.
  • Assist in the creation and teaching of staff training.

  • Various recreational activities. 
  • Principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.

  • Exhibit good leadership qualities, sound judgment, and integrity; accept guidance willingly.
  • Manage difficult situations when needed, such as injury, illness, and disruption. 
  • Work with the public in a fast-paced and challenging environment. 
  • Learn new activities and tasks; accept and adapt to change. 
  • Perform all duties with safety as a top priority. 

Working Conditions and Aptitudes

  • Duties are performed indoors and outdoors, including working in inclement weather, and extreme temperatures. 
  • Duties primarily performed in a public setting, requiring constant interaction with a variety of people.
  • Work effectively with crowds, uncooperative participants during difficult situations, emergency response, and periods of continuous demand.
  • Work a variety of shifts, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays depending on department needs.
  • This position is ineligible for remote work. Essential duties cannot be completed without being physically present.
