The Service Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of commercial HVAC equipment, chillers, mechanical systems, and Building Automation Systems (BAS). This role supports customers across a variety of facility types including healthcare, education, commercial office buildings, and industrial facilities.
Service Technicians work both independently and collaboratively to diagnose system issues, perform preventative maintenance, and ensure that HVAC and BAS systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. The position requires strong technical aptitude, a commitment to safety, and a customer-focused mindset.
Technicians represent ModernControls in the field and are expected to maintain a high level of professionalism while delivering quality service that supports long-term customer relationships and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
HVAC Service & Maintenance
• Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on commercial HVAC equipment including chillers, rooftop units (RTUs), air handling units (AHUs), boilers, pumps, and hydronic systems.
• Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults using appropriate tools and testing equipment.
• Perform system startups, inspections, and operational testing.
• Replace defective components and ensure equipment operates within manufacturer specifications.
• Maintain proper documentation of service work performed.
Building Automation Systems (BAS)
• Assist with troubleshooting and servicing of building automation and controls systems.
• Interface with BAS platforms to identify alarms, trends, and system performance issues.
• Verify operation of sensors, actuators, control valves, and control sequences.
• Coordinate with BAS engineers or controls specialists for advanced programming or system modifications.
Customer Service & Communication
• Serve as a professional representative of the company while interacting with customers on job sites.
• Communicate service findings, recommended repairs, and operational concerns to customers and internal management.
• Maintain strong customer relationships through responsive and professional service delivery.
Documentation & Reporting
• Complete detailed service reports and documentation for all work performed.
• Record equipment conditions, parts used, and recommendations for future service.
• Maintain accurate time and job reporting through company systems.
Safety & Compliance
• Adhere to all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
• Utilize proper PPE and safe work practices when performing service activities.
• Participate in safety meetings, training, and compliance programs.
Requirements
Qualifications
Education & Experience
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Technical or vocational training in HVAC, refrigeration, or mechanical systems preferred.
• 3+ years of experience servicing commercial HVAC equipment preferred.
• Experience with building automation systems or controls is a plus.
Certifications
• EPA Universal Certification preferred.
• Additional manufacturer or BAS certifications are a plus.
Technical Skills
• Strong understanding of HVAC mechanical and electrical systems.
• Ability to read wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and control schematics.
• Familiarity with BAS platforms and control devices preferred.
• Proficiency with standard HVAC diagnostic tools and equipment.
Soft Skills
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining strong team collaboration.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to climb ladders and work in mechanical rooms, rooftops, and confined spaces.
• Ability to work in varying weather and environmental conditions.
Additional Requirements
• Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
• Ability to participate in on-call service rotation.
• Ability to travel locally between customer sites.
