Job Summary:
The Assistant Controller, Construction Accounting is responsible for leading daily accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls for a fast-paced construction and restoration organization. This role oversees the month-end close, job-costing accuracy, revenue recognition policies, and all major accounting cycles, ensuring compliance with GAAP and construction-specific regulatory requirements. The role partners cross-functionally with Operations, Project Management, Procurement, and Executive Leadership to ensure financial data integrity, support margin optimization, and drive continuous process improvement.
Requirements
General Responsibilities:
- Financial Reporting and Month End- Close:
- Manage and execute accurate and timely month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including all journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations.
- Establish scalable month-end procedures and continuously refine accounting close timelines and controls.
- Prepare and review consolidated financial statements for multiple operating entities.
- Maintain the financial reporting structure across ERP, job-costing, and business intelligence systems.
- Lead preparation of internal reporting packages, KPIs, and variance analyses for senior leadership. Construction Specific Accounting:
- Construction Specific Accounting:
- Oversee job-cost accounting, including correct posting of labor, materials, subcontractor costs, equipment, and overhead allocations.
- Manage WIP schedules, percent-complete calculations, deferred revenue, and job margin analysis.
- Improve systems for COGS estimation at month-end, especially when invoices and labor data lag behind job completion.
- Monitor retention / retainage receivable and payable balances.
- Ensure accuracy of Change Orders, supplements, and revised contract values in job-costing systems.
- Partner with Operations to confirm job completion status, punch-list progress, and readiness for revenue recognition.
- Oversee CAT-event accounting, including rapid scaling of operations, variable labor, and specialized job tracking.
- Support field operations in understanding margin erosion, budget-to-actual variances, and billing risks.
- Revenue Recognition & Customer Accounting:
- Ensure proper revenue recognition under GAAP for construction contracts and insurance restoration projects.
- Review client contracts for financial, accounting, and procedural implications.
- Oversee A/R, lien waiver processes, and invoice accuracy.
- Manage intercompany revenue, shared labor, and shared equipment allocations.
- AP, Vendor and Treasury Management:
- Oversee AP cycle, cash disbursements, and vendor management, safeguard company assets.
- Manage subcontractor compliance requirements (W-9s, COIs, licenses, etc.).
- Monitor daily banking, cash forecasts, and credit line activity.
- Work with procurement on material vendor pricing, purchase orders, and cost control initiatives.
- Internal Controls, Compliance and Audits:
- Maintain and improve internal control environment and accounting policies.
- Support external audit, tax filings, and internal compliance efforts.
- Implement controls over field operations: job file completeness, contract documentation, vendor approval matrix, etc.
- Systems, ERP and Process Improvement:
- Manage and implement financial systems and ERP enhancements.
- Partner with IT and Operations to improve job-costing workflows, automate data flow, and streamline reporting.
- Identify and implement new features, processes, and automation to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
- Support integration of newly acquired businesses into financial reporting processes.
- Leadership & Cross-Functional Partnership:
- Manage and mentor accounting team members; provide ongoing coaching and performance leadership.
- Collaborate with project managers, estimators, sales teams, and field operations to drive accurate financial results.
- Respond promptly and professionally to internal and external inquiries.
- Champion a culture of accountability, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA or MBA preferred.
- 5–10+ years progressive accounting experience, including prior management or Assistant Controller experience.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and construction/project-based accounting practices (WIP, job costing, retaining, revenue recognition, etc.).
- Experience with ERP systems (NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Viewpoint, or other construction/SAAS systems preferred).

- Ability to oversee large data sets and adapt to high transaction volume environments.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills; ability to handle conflict professionally.
- Able to work extended hours during high-volume periods or CAT events.
- Demonstrated success improving processes, standardizing workflows, and implementing automation or ERP upgrades.
- Strong personal ethics, professionalism, and attention to detail.
- Construction, roofing, restoration or insurance claims industry experience, preferred.
- Familiarity with Davis–Bacon wage rules, certified payroll, lien law basics, and insurance carrier billing workflows, preferred.
- Prior experience in private equity environments or rapidly scaling organizations, preferred.
- Experience supporting integrations or multi-entity consolidations, preferred.
