Position Summary


The VP of Finance & Operations leads all accounting and finance matters and is responsible for the daily operations associated with the annual budget, financial statement activities, and tax filings. This role also provides strategic oversight and management of Information Technology and Data Analytics functions to ensure alignment with organizational goals and operational excellence. 


Job Duties and Responsibilities


Accounting (35%): 

  • Direct and perform financial accounting functions to ensure timely and accurate reporting of financial information.
  • Manage all financial statement preparation activities, including statements of financial position, statements of activities and net assets, analysis of various accounts, income/expenses, and all related supporting work papers.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the annual capital and administrative budget.
  • Provide oversight of payroll processing to ensure accurate and timely compensation for all employees.
  • Oversee benefits expense tracking and reconciliation as part of the organization’s overall financial reporting.

Compliance (40%):

  • Ensure that all accounting functions are executed properly and efficiently in accordance with applicable financial accounting standards and regulations.
  • Oversee and manage accounts payable, pledges receivable and financial reporting.
  • Oversee the annual financial audit, and other special audits or reviews. Meet periodically with the outside auditors to maintain and keep them informed of changes within the organization.
  • Ensure that current accounting standards and legal requirements are met.
  • Responsible for the organization’s Form 990 and other tax filings and requirements.
  • Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls, financial procedures, compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local laws, and compliance with accounting policies of the organization.
  • Provide oversight of payroll-related tax reports and year-end filings (W-2s, 1099s, etc.) to ensure accuracy and timeliness.

Executive Duties (15%):

  • Ensure that all accounting functions are executed properly and efficiently in accordance with applicable financial accounting standards and regulations.
  • Oversee and manage accounts payable, pledges receivable, and financial reporting.
  • Oversee the annual financial audit and other special audits or reviews. Meet periodically with the outside auditors to maintain and keep them informed of changes within the organization.

Data Analytics Oversight (10%):


  • Oversee data management, analytics, and reporting functions across the organization.
  • Partner with the Data Analyst Team to develop key performance indicators and dashboards for leadership decision-making.
  • Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with data privacy regulations.
  • Guide the development of data-driven insights to support strategic planning and operational improvements.
  • Foster a culture of data literacy and evidence-based decision-making across departments.

Information Technology Oversight (10%):


  • Manage IT contractor relationships to ensure IT infrastructure, systems, and technology initiatives meet organizational needs.
  • Oversee cybersecurity measures and data protection protocols to safeguard organizational assets.
  • Manage technology budgets and vendor relationships to optimize costs and service delivery.
  • Guide major software implementations and system integrations across the organization.
  • Ensure business continuity planning and disaster recovery protocols are maintained.
  • Support digital transformation initiatives that enhance operational efficiency.


Requirements

Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field; master’s degree preferred
  • CPA or at least seven years of related experience and/or training in a leadership role with progressive responsibility
  • Experience with financial statements and nonprofit financial reporting
  • Demonstrated experience managing or overseeing multiple business functions (finance, IT, or operations)
  • Experience leading teams and developing talent
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of confidential information and department integrity
  • Strong strategic thinking and business acumen

Language/Math/Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information across all functional areas.

Computer Skills

  • Proficient computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office applications; Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with financial systems and data analytics platforms
  • Understanding of IT systems, cybersecurity concepts, and technology infrastructure
