Position: PJ Boatwright Intern - Golf Course Maintenance

Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Superintendent


POSITION SUMMARY:

The Golf Course Maintenance Intern will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of golf course and grounds maintenance while working closely with the Superintendent and maintenance team. This internship is designed for individuals pursuing a career in turfgrass management, agronomy, or golf course operations and provides practical exposure to modern maintenance practices, equipment, and environmental stewardship. This position will be exposed to all aspects of golf course maintenance, ranging from agronomy to golf course setup. This position will receive daily guidance and is expected to work collectively with other members of the Poppy Hills maintenance team.

  • Learn and participate in daily maintenance activities - mowing greens/tees/aprons, raking bunkers, and daily golf course set-up (setting tee markers, cutting cups, etc.)
  • Learn and participate in all agronomic activities including monitoring grass conditions, spraying, fertilizing, and water management programs.
  • Helps return all equipment to the designated location at the maintenance facility; and cleans the maintenance areas, wash pads or related cleaning areas.
  • Opportunity to participate in management meetings. Work with other golf course management staff to understand how all units operate the golf course cohesively.
  • Operates all equipment related to the golf course in a safe and effective manner.
  • Support and always promote safe work habits and a safe working environment.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned, including professional development.


Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED; currently enrolled in a 2- or 4-year degree program or certificate program in turf management or a related field.
  • Willingness to learn and expand your current skill set.
  • Familiarity with golf terminology.
  • Regular exposure to moving machinery, tools, chemicals, and irrigation systems.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Bend, kneel, crouch, and reach as required.
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to complete instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One (1) year of golf course maintenance experience.

WORK SCHEDULE:

  • Position will work 40 hours per week, working alternating weekends. Typically, weekday shifts are 5am to 1:30pm, weekend shifts are 5am to 10am. Final schedule will be agreed upon with the supervisor.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

This is a short-term (9 month), full-time, Non-Exempt position, with a starting salary of $20.00 per hour. Some clothing will be provided, , including required protective equipment for work specific assignments, with the employee expected to source and maintain a high-standard of attire at all times. Benefit package includes sick leave, holidays, meals, and golf benefits also included.
