JOB PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Board, the fundamental missions of the Bookstore Manager are to facilitate the sale of the store's inventory in a cost-effective manner and to maintain an adequate pool of volunteers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Include, but not limited to, the following:
- Coordinating the day-to-day bookstore operations, including opening, closing, stocking, pricing, weeding, organizing the store and offering customer service.
- Coordinating backroom and donation operations, which includes sorting and storing of inventory and maintaining backroom and garage spaces.
- Communicating with volunteers regarding desk shift schedules, bookstore support roles, donations, health and safety requirements, and training.
- Collaborating with the Volunteer Committee in recruiting and training new volunteers in a timely manner.
- Collaborating with the Bookstore Committee in sales promotions, inventory management and daily operations of the bookstore.
- Collaborating with the Publicity Committee in organizing and supervising special sales.
- Writing “Weekly Specials and News “ for the website, e-mail blasts, volunteer newsletters and weekly memos.
- Communicating with KPL Director and Head of Facilities Management regarding compliance with KPL health and safety standards, emergency procedures, and donation regulations.
- Attending monthly Friends Board meetings.
- Carrying out other duties as directed by the Board.
REPORTS TO: The Bookstore Committee Chair, who reports to the Board. Coordinates with the Office Manager.

- Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to travel independently within the office and patron areas of the Bookstore. In the work environments described below, the position requires verbal and written conversation with others. Frequent repositioning of self is required with the ability to occasionally maintain stationary positions for moderate lengths of time. Occasional movement and lifting of objects up to 25 pounds. Vision abilities required by the job include close vision.
- Work environment: Work will be performed in a retail environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
Requirements
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Skill in organizing and record keeping
- Skill in working with volunteers and the public
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing
- Facility in current applicable technology
- Skill in training staff and volunteers
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Application, references, cover letter, and high school diploma are required. Associates Degree or more is preferred.
- Willingness to accept flexible scheduling is required.
- Experience working with volunteers preferred.
SCHEDULE:
20 hours weekly
SALARY:
$15 an hour
