About the Role

Do you love science but feel that a research career isn’t enough to sate your desire to learn more about the natural and technological world? Do you enjoy reading papers and keeping up to date with developments outside your chosen area of research? If the answer is ‘yes’, you could be the person we’re looking for to join the editorial team of Nature.

Nature, the international weekly journal of science, seeks to appoint an Associate or Senior Editor to cover the broad research fields of environmental engineering and technologies.  And further our aim to publish the world’s best original research. In this role you will cover a broad range of environmentally relevant engineering processes and technologies including, but not limited to: water, resource and pollution management; sustainable infrastructure; and the practical development and deployment at scale of sustainable technologies more generally.

You will have a strong engineering background in any relevant discipline and a proven interest in (and good working knowledge of) technological interventions and practical solutions to sustainability issues. You will play a key role in determining the representation of these developments in our pages through the selection of manuscripts for publication and by interacting closely with the relevant research communities. You will report to the Deputy Editor geosciences team, and also work closely with editorial colleagues from across the Nature teams - you will be expected to play an important role in influencing the representation of your fields in the journal as a whole.

This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating position and calls for a keen interest in the practice and communication of science and technology.

The position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis and can be based in our Beijing, Madrid, or Shanghai offices on a hybrid working pattern.

Role responsibilities:

  • Handle original research papers and review material, working with the team on every aspect of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review.
  • Make well-reasoned and timely editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in the light of expert advice
  • Liaise extensively with Editors at other journals in the Nature family and experts in the international research community.
  • Engage with the scientific community via travel to conferences and research institutions.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

Essential

  • Research experience to PhD level (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline — ideally with a strong background in sustainability-related research, but highly qualified candidates from other areas of engineering with a good understanding of sustainability issues will be considered.
  • A passion for science and research and a thirst to learn more with the ability to demonstrate the breadth of your interest in scientific research and technological developments, both within and beyond your speciality.
  • The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of this discipline.
  • Excellent time-management skills in order to efficiently navigate multiple time-sensitive activities and shifting priorities.
  • Be eager to interact with scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be fluent in English (written and spoken).

Desirable

  • Editorial experience is not required, as full training is given, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and will potentially be considered for the Senior Editor position.

To apply, please submit:

  • a CV detailing your education, employment history, list of published scientific papers, and any achievements demonstrating your suitability for the position
  • a cover letter including your class of degree, a brief account of your research and other relevant experience, and a concise discussion of relevant recent scientific developments which you have found particularly exciting (explaining why).
