POSITION SUMMARY
DEFINITION
The Lead Clinical Lab Scientist performs quantitative and qualitative Clinical Laboratory remissions as requested by physicians including procurement of specimens, computations of tests, and submitting completed reports. This position is assigned the duties of technical expertise of one of the sections of the Clinical Laboratory. This position also assists in the operation of the Laboratory by being responsible for specialized department functions; being capable performing all tests in their respective sections; and assisting in solutions of technical problems.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Bachelor's Degree and successful completion of an internship in a hospital lab
Experience
Minimum 3 year recent experience in an approved hospital laboratory.
Extensive experience in a specific specialty department (i.e. Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, or Immunohematology).
Licensure/Certification
Possession of a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License is required.
KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Extensive experience and knowledge of a technical specialty area within the lab (i.e. Immunohematology).
Hospital established policies and procedures for quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
Clinical Laboratory instruments and equipment.
Clinical Laboratory terminology and Laboratory routines.
The appropriate uses of procedures and tests.
Exposure to infections and contagious diseases.
Exposure to the risk of blood borne diseases.
Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
Federal, State, and local laws and regulations governing clinical laboratory practices.
Ability to:
Perform the full range of laboratory duties and responsibilities in an acute care setting with specific responsibilities associated with a technical specialty area.
Plan and organize diagnostic testing procedures on patient specimens.
Maintain concise and complete records and test reports as required.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, patients, and fellow employees, and with all internal and external customers.
Handle absentee replacement on short notice.
Work occasional irregular hours.
Manage emergency or crisis situations; requires judgement/action which could result in undesirable patient outcomes.
Secure the cooperation of employees to work effectively together.
Keep abreast of developments in area of laboratory testing.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
