About the Role

About the Role:

Grade Level (for internal use):

09

The Team: The Biofuels Research and Analytics division of S&P Global Energy Horizons provides ‘well to wheels’ coverage of the global biofuels market, providing fundamental insights and developing views on the emerging trends that will drive the long-term development of biofuels. The team is responsible for generating long-term forecasts of biofuels supply and demand, as well as the future value and margins of biofuels.

The team consists of analysts and researchers worldwide, each covering their respective markets or niches and collaborating with other teams within the broader S&P Global Commodity Insights organization.

What’s in it for you:

  • You will be at the forefront of a rapidly developing industry, and this role offers opportunities to develop in-depth knowledge of the biofuels sector and its role in Energy Transition and the decarbonization of the energy sector.
  • While your focus will be primarily on developing and refining the biorefinery margin model, you will also have a hand in deciphering the biofuels and biogas sector on a global scale.
  • You will be collaborating with a global team and have exposure and access to other expertise in associated industries.

Responsibilities and Impact:

This role will lead the maintenance and improvement of the biorefinery margins model, with the aim of further building out its capabilities to cover both emerging production pathways and existing biofuels and biogas production plants. This is a unique hybrid role, and we are seeking the best combination of skills and experience in refining, programming and/or data science.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who would like to join an international team of like-minded people. You are applying for a dynamic career path within a nascent though growing environment. More specifically, responsibilities include:

  • Lead development and maintenance of the BCMA tool, improving model structure, inputs, assumptions, and documentation.
  • Support biomethane research, particularly RNG supply, demand, pricing, policy, and market dynamics.
  • Troubleshoot model and data issues quickly, identify root causes, and implement long‑term fixes.
  • Build and maintain Python workflows for data ingestion, cleaning, validation, and automation.
  • Use SQL to extract and validate data; work with partners to improve data quality and lineage.
  • Interpret model outputs and clearly communicate assumptions, limitations, and risks.
  • Explain model updates and their workflow impacts to non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Maintain clear, reproducible documentation for models and recurring processes.
  • Run end‑to‑end analyses—from defining questions to interpreting and communicating results.
  • Contribute to written research and client deliverables with accurate, timely insights.
  • Enhance the biogas/biomethane cost and margin framework as the role evolves.
  • Manage multiple deadlines, flag risks early, and balance competing priorities.
  • Collaborate across a distributed team and contribute to continuous improvement.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, or another relevant quantitative program (with equivalent experience).
  • Advanced Python skills are essential for troubleshooting, workflow construction, automation, and robust model validation; SQL proficiency is required.
  • Strong team orientation—comfortable collaborating, sharing knowledge, and mentoring/uplifting colleagues when needed.
  • Prior understanding of biofuels, refining and/or gas markets is preferred but not required.
  • Excellent English writing and presentation skills.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work to deadlines and prioritize a complex workload with limited supervision.
  • Must be flexible with the ability to work collaboratively.
