[What the role is]
The Learning Support Assistant (SEN) provides direct learning and functional support to students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), enabling them to access the curriculum, develop vocational and work readiness skills, and build independence for successful transition into internship and employment. The role works closely with Student Care professionals and lecturers to support inclusive teaching and learning practices within ITE College Central.[What you will be working on]
- Provide direct in‑class and out‑of‑class learning support to students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including support during theory/practical lessons and assessments.
- Support students in accessing learning content, including reinforcing instructions, describing verbal/visual content where required, and assisting with the use of assistive technology and accessible learning materials.
- Support the implementation of approved SEN arrangements, including extended assessment time and use of assistive devices, in accordance with institutional guidelines.
- Monitor students’ learning engagement, functional skills, and independence, and provide feedback to the reporting officer to support ongoing intervention planning.
- Contribute to transition and work‑readiness support, including development of independence, self‑advocacy, and confidence for internship and employment pathways.
- Assist with non‑teaching period duties, such as reviewing course materials for accessibility, identifying potential learning barriers, and preparing students for subsequent terms.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records related to student support and interventions in line with institutional requirements.
- Where required, support other SEN students with higher needs while maintaining priority for assigned students.
[What we are looking for]
- Suitable credentials in Special Education, Psychology, Social Work, Education, or a related discipline.
- Experience supporting students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in an educational, training, or care setting is preferred.
- Exposure to supporting students with physical, sensory, learning, or developmental needs will be an advantage.
- Demonstrated patience, empathy, and professionalism when working with students requiring individualised or intensive support.
- Ability to support learning access in classroom and practical environments, including reinforcement of instructions and learning tasks.
- Willingness to learn and support the use of assistive technology and accessibility tools (training will be provided where required).
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with Student Care professionals and lecturers.
- Good observation, communication, and documentation skills to monitor student engagement and provide feedback.
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
- Resourceful, adaptable, and able to manage multiple support needs while prioritising assigned students.
- Basic IT proficiency (e.g. Microsoft Office applications).
